50 old truck driver wants to learn electric bass

Hello. A couple of weeks ago, I’ve made a post on Reddit with the same title and where they gave me some good advice.
I was about to buy the Yamaha TRBX 174 from Thomann but I decided to explore the used market and see if I could find some good deals.

Found this Squire J bass with less than a year that comes with a strap and a semi-rigid bag for 200€. Which I believe its the affinity series.

Also found this Yamaha TRBX304 from 2023 with a stand and a strap for 250€

So my question is which one should I pick? Should I go for one of the used ones or buy the Yamaha TRBX 174 from Thomann? I can’t go to a shop and try basses so these are my options.
Thank you.

The TRBX304 is by far the best bass there overall but if the Squier calls to you style wise it’s not a bad choice. The TRBX174 is a more reliable quality-wise choice than a Squier Affinity but it’s more of a 50/50 thing there.

Go with the Squire.
I’d recommend some GHS black tapewounds…very easy on your fingers and killer tone.

Would actually be my last choice out of those three, but some people really like Fender-shaped objects, so if that style calls then yeah it’s not going to be a bad choice, will likely be fine.

Maybe also look at starter packs. Usually get a bass, bag, lead, strap and amp. On Thomann the affinity is £229 and the Rumble 15 £111 bought separately but the starter set is £299 so strap and lead thrown in and costs £50 ($66) less.

I agree with @howard here. I have a Squier P bass and a TRBX174 and 9.9 times out of 10 I’m playing the Yamaha. If I had a choice now, I’d pick the 304.

+1 for the TRBX304

I own/have owned all 3 and it’s the choice I’d make of those were my options.

I agree. The Affinity series are the low end of the Squier line. You can’t just say Yamaha is better than Squier, but you can say it’s better than the Affinity series for sure. They are not comparable to the Yamaha

The seller must have read all the good things people were saying about Yamaha in this post, and decided to keep it!!!

He’s from Italy and I am from Portugal. He was worried that something happen in the shipping.

From what I can see in the picture the Squier Spaghetti logo is consistent with the Classic Vibe model, if that’s the case that would definitely be the one to get. It’s built better than Fender MIM, and for 200 euros, it’s a steal. Confirmation which series it is.

Neck doesn’t look like a CV to me - looks like a basic, lightly finished maple neck like you would see on an Affinity.

Yeah it maybe The Constitution and Mabo but it doesn’t look like the Vibe to me :man_shrugging:

I think you are correct, as I look at the neck heel and I notice that it’s not as shinny as it should be to be a CV. Yamaha it is. :joy:
