Something kind of like this happened decades ago. I think it was in D.C. George Thorogood and the Destroyers were playing in a club directly across the street from another club that was hosting either Muddy Waters or B.B. King (can’t remember). In the middle of one song, George switched to a really long instrument cable and walked out of the front door, still playing. There was a short period with no guitar, then it started again. Muddy or B.B. came walking in and finished the song and the set with George’s band. George finished with the other band. Very cool!

At the Austin Opry House one night, George Thorogood was the titular headliner. But, as it happened, the opening act was Stevie Ray Vaughan, and this was years before Stevie had made it big.
Stevie proceeded to summarily tear the joint up, and then burn it down. The crowd understandably went ape-shit wild.
Then Thorogood took the stage.
Of course, he led with Bad to the Bone, which was met with crowd recognition, but tepid enthusiasm. His show went straight downhill from there.
Playing repetitive rhythm guitar, song after song, and directly after a bona fide badass guitar slinger has commanded the stage, rapidly turned the night into a booking agent’s nightmare. And Thorogood’s as well.

At least you remembered who the headliner was. I once saw Focus open for some band that I don’t think I remembered the next morning, and certainly not today, some 50 years later. It’s a beatch for headliners when the openers bring the house down.
EDIT: That also happened when an opener couldn’t make it and they replaced them with Larry Graham on his first solo tour with Graham Central Station. SO good. Also happened with Buddy Miles. I can’t remember the headliner for either of those shows.
Ha! I remember Thorogood because I naively bought a ticket to see him and was way disappointed in his performance, particularly since it was overshadowed by sheer virtuosity.
I’ve never seen Larry, but I’ve seen Buddy several times. I can attest that Buddy’s shows are first rate.

My boss realized he could do this from his house, so he would put on rap and hiphop stuff at a hole in the wall central wisconsin bar. The owner knew it was him and called him up to tell him to knock it off.
