A little music related fun (Part 2)

No, that’s not what taking LSD is like.

I first did psychedelics when I was 18 and continued throughout my 20s, including many different formulations of LSD that provided a wide range of different effects. No two provided the identical trip: some were entirely cerebral while others were more visual. Individual experiences depended on the maker and relative content of pure LSD it contained.

Also, contrary to what’s been said here, an acid trip does not last an entire day, with after effects lingering through the next day. That said, the memories of tripping and the new perspectives on existence they bring last forever.

It’s literally impossible to describe what it’s like to do pure LSD, such as the very best, most pure I ever did: Owsley acid.

I can only describe what it definitely was not.

It wasn’t frenetic. It wasn’t wall-melting visuals. It wasn’t hysterical giggling/sobbing. It wasn’t hopping around, dancing uncontrollably.

Trying to fully describe what it actually was like to someone who’s never tripped would be akin to trying to describe the color purple to a blind person. Or opera to a deaf person.

Without a direct, shared point of reference, verbal, written and even tactile attempts at describing the experience are ineffective.

Jimi Hendrix, who came up as a musician who played blues, essentially emigrated to England, seeking new artistic influences and freedom. It was there that he first took LSD. After that, his music and perspective on life changed entirely. He began writing and performing psychedelic music.

His first album was titled “Are You Experienced?”. The lyrics of the title song was his attempt to describe what it was like to experience LSD:

If you can just get your mind together
Then come on across to me
We’ll hold hands, and then we’ll watch the sunrise
From the bottom of the sea

But first, are you experienced?
Or have you ever been experienced?
Well, I have

I know, I know you probably scream and cry
That your little world won’t let you go
But who in your measly little world
Are you trying to prove that
You’re made out of gold and, uh, can’t be sold?

So uh, are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Well, I have
Ah, let me prove it to you

Trumpets and violins I can, uh, hear in the distance
I think they’re calling our names
Maybe now you can’t hear them, but you will, ha-ha
If you just take hold of my hand

Oh, but are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?

Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful

“Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful”

That’s the closest definition of the LSD experience I’ve ever heard.

This might be available in your country @Andrea_FI

It’s a measured look at the subject.

I read some interesting research on PTSD and using stuff like MDMA to help manage it. Not long term medication but allowing the drug to let people be more open to talk about their experience and work things through with medical professionals.

Wish it was available for me all those years ago, when I was having a hard time with it.

Friends of mine had quite unpleasant times in Afganistan, Irak, Syria and ex-Yugoslavia.

MDMA and LSD was not readily available through official channels back then, and therapy did either not work … or they did not want to do it cause of the stigma (especially in the 90s) or negative impact on their carreer when admitting to PTSD.

Some of them turned to alcohol, all kinds of stupid hard drugs and generally dangereous behaviour. Not all of those made it, unfortunately.

Others discovered the techno scene, in Holland, UK and Germany. And of course MDMA (and sometimes LSD) played a role. All of those that went the party route are still there … and they can at least cope … and some of them say that they became “better men” because of it … and are 100% in peace with what they did/experienced, even happier than ever/before.

What I want to say: it’s never too late. Again: I would never advise anyone to take drugs, whatever that means by whatever definition.
But in some cases it’s better to take the “scenic” route…

They’re using mushrooms here in Colorado to treat PTSD and depression. For someone who has never done hallucinogens, I think mushrooms are a much friendlier introduction. Mellower, easier to control the dose, doesn’t last as long as LSD and not as much of a hangover after. I did a fair bit of them when I was a teenager, I used to go to raves quite a bit so acid, ex, and mushrooms were around all the time. I preferred acid and ex when I was clubbing but mushrooms when I was just hanging out. The last Dead show I went to, a few weeks before Jerry died was a mushroom day.

Sorry @MikeC … not true!

@Andrea_FI- again, don’t do it. But if you do, get some thorough information (obviously not here at BB), and do be prepared for a long trip. And take the day after off, just to cope with everything you experienced. It will be substantial!

Sorry, back at you. You can say whatever you want, but you can’t tell me what I personally experienced to be true literally dozens of times throughout my life.

Sorry @Whying_Dutchman it is true. Simple as that. An acid trip lasts maybe 5 or six hours, 10 tops and It does not persist the next day. But yes it’s not something to get into lightly. You don’t want to be taking acid when depressed or even in a bad mood. And yes it’s best to be with some friends.

If you’re looking at it lasting that long then you’re not looking at acid, at LSD.

I was quite heavily into it, mainly in the ‘70s, before I moved on to psilocybin mushrooms which I was much more cool with. Trip length about the same.

The issue with mushrooms is, that they can make you feel nauseous. And that will have effects on your mind set, possibly leading to a bad trip.
Also, the effect of mushrooms is very hard to predict. A natural product can have a lot effect … or almost none.
In my opinion, if you know the exact dosage (as it is tested) and have somebody experienced to guide you, LSD is much safer.

Hangover is not an issue, for both mushrooms and LSD. But you need some time to process this experience. This is why I say you need to take the day after off, and just be yourself.

But that’s just hearsay

Yes, I agree, 100%! But I do know of friends that had 8 hour trips … but then we talk about medical grade LSD in a higher doses
And: it’s not about persisting. It’s about coping. This is a significant experience, especially for “beginners”…

Depends on the mushroom. Amanita Muscaria (Fly agaric, those fairy tale mushrooms, white with red spots) has some nasty shit it in and can be quite dangerous. But psilocybin has not toxins in it and no associated nausea.

With no respect whatsoever, I’m not taking mental health advice from strangers on the internet.

I’m in a better place than I was. It doesn’t change what I did / was asked to do. But my temper is controlled to a point where I can hold down a job / long term relationship with ease.

Not everyone is as lucky as me.

I have seen so many people b@rf on mexican and hawaiian mushrooms, even on the local German mushrooms, that can be found in my mountain bike forest.

It’s not the psilocybin, I guess, it might be all kinds of other stuff.

LOL! I have a great story about those that I cannot tell here. I would never do something like that, but I have a danger seeker friend that did. It was very very funny (not for him though :-)).

Also, just to say: “told you so!”

”Physical effects may occur, including nausea, vomiting, euphoria, muscle weakness or relaxation, drowsiness, and lack of coordination.”

”LSD taken orally has an onset of action of 0.4 to 1.0 hours and a duration of 7 to 12 hours.”

But that’s just Wikipedia, not Grok

My first comment was more like a joke, because they look so surreal in that video. But I’ve heard from people who have taken LSD and magic mushrooms that the experience one goes through is almost religious, numinous, mind opening and transformative. I wish it wasn’t illegal and it would be great if it was possible to find pure, unadulterated LSD and try in a safe environment, like Chris said above. Maybe some year I might have to visit the Netherlands for that.

Thanks Barney! I found this on Netflix here and added it to my list! :+1:

I once watched a Netflix documentary called DMT: the Spirit Molecule. It sounded fascinating!

I, unlike one other, can’t speak for everyone who has tripped on psychedelics, but the experiences I’ve had have been entirely transformative and for the better.

I am not recommending that anyone should follow my lead. Just sharing a tiny bit of my experience doing psychedelics.

Well certainly not the variety we have in Scotland! I guess I never took them anywhere else and was unaware there were quite so many varieties of psilocybin.

Nice one for you; I believe the Sami shamans would feed amanita muscaria to their reindeer and then drink their urine. Apparently they filtered out the toxins but left the hallucinogens! Some say that’s where santa flying in a sleigh towed by reindeers comes from  Pretty sure I never want to try that!

Two of my friends once got mushrooms (psilocybin, I think) and they tried one at a time, with one watching over while the other was experiencing it. They told me of having strange experiences, like feeling their limbs getting longer, the fingers getting longer and longer and looking like snakes. I think they said it lasted (or felt like lasted) a long time. They had strange visions and felt like being somewhere else.
