THERE ARE MULTIPLE KINDS OF TONEWOOD TREES!

That no-good seed-selling guy didn’t say nothing about multiple kinds! I’m kinda thinking I got screwed now…

Is tonewood really real? or is it a hoax created by some guy to make people buy basses that are made of specific materials that actually dont make a difference? hmmmm…

I just like saying the name of some of the more exotic tonewoods. In fact, a cool sounding name for a tonewood is more marketable to me than the tonewood itself.

“Bubinga”, for instance, or “okume” and “jatoba”. If I can walk into a gig and lay down something like, “yeah, this beauty has a bubinga body with an okume neck and a jatoba fretboard,” that’s all that matters.

(Just like my posts above, this should be read with tongue fully in cheek.)

Well, the reasons that people discount this video are:

  • You can clearly hear the differences (even in the video)
  • You definitely can tell with actual instruments
  • No one has ever claimed that the wood is anything but a distant secondary to the electronics and strings, a few percent of the sound at most
  • It is easy to demonstrate for yourself using different guitars with identical pickups and strings, and pots and caps - the wood actually does matter.

But yes it is a subtle thing.

Another thing about his videos is that while I love what he does, his methodologies are questionable. For example, in his “do expensive mics matter” comparison, he decides to define the SM-58 as the neutral basis for comparison. This is not really a valid thing because the SM-58 is not a flat mic and additionally varies a lot with positioning in its cardioid. So really his whole mic video was actually “This is how it relates to a SM-58 in a specific position”, not “does it make a difference.”

Yea…thats true

It’s absolutely 100% real thing.

Is it important? that’s a tough answer. If you have as many basses as me and want to play a little bass body marimba, the different wood tone is a must.

If I must choose I rather have better looking bass body and neck wood than better sounding one. I can make adjustment in post but photoshop the look is a PIA.
