I will also say that being in a band does not imply you play live at all. I’m still in a band and we still do stuff (like the dozen or so covers we’ve done in the last few years), it’s just more chill now.
The important part of being in a band is working with others on music. Whether or not you play live is more fun on top of that than anything.
I was kind of wondering why a thread didn’t show up when the video came out. Then forgot to ask.
This video actually got me to create a bandmix profile, though I still haven’t set it to “looking for a band” or whatever their magic words are.
They email me ever couple weeks with “these people are looking at your profile” and it is always people a couple hours (or more) away. It seems their location logic doesn’t exactly understand “local”.
But I’m getting closer to pushing the magic button. It’s similar to my cover videos being “unlisted” on YT until recently.
There’s a few things to consider when you’re posting bass covers on YT
The bass community is generally very positive
There are millions of videos getting uploaded every week so your cover just isn’t going to get much watch time from anyone let alone anyone outside the bass community. The plus side of that is no crappy comments.
It’s a really useful calling card to say ‘This is me and my current ability’
Yeah, I had them as unlisted so you had to have the link.
Then one day I made one public, switched browsers (so I wasn’t logged into my YT account) and searched for the exact title of it. My cover was like the third result, which freaked me out and I changed it back to unlisted.
Then a couple weeks later I was like “screw it - worst case scenario I turn off comments” and made them all public. My highest viewed video has a whopping 79 views.
Similarly, I just have to work my nerve up to say “yes, i’m ready to get into a band”.
Something that I’ve been doing for the past few months is adding the new band set list material into Garage Band.
I pull in the tracks then record myself against the original. Then sit back and have a listen. It’s almost like there’s a different part of the brain that lights up and you can hear things that need working on that you don’t notice when playing.
Just wanted to drop a shout out to @JoshFossgreen for this awesome course. at 46 years old I signed up for BazzBuzz in February of this year and finally started learning to play the bass I bought during covid. On Saturday (just over 9 months after starting) I went for an audition with a local band who have invited me to join. Just low key rock classic covers and short sets, but I’m super excited to play with other musicians and in front of people. Without BassBuzz there’s zero chance I’d have this opportunity.
It’s not quite a band, but my real life bass teacher just started running group jam sessions at his place! I’ve only been to one so far, but I really enjoyed it, after I finished feeling horribly stiff and awkward. Once I’m back on my feet from hernia surgery recovery, I’ll do more.
