I got started on bass because a buddy needed a bass player for his band, and I happened to have an old bass I had hung on the wall at home as decor. So, I started playing with a band before I knew how to play bass. I’m using BtB to solidify my sketchy bass background.
Which reminds me of this joke"
A dad gets his son a bass and lessons for his birthday. When the son comes home from his first lesson dad asks, " what did you learn at your first bass lesson son?"
“Well dad, I learned the first 1…2…3…4…5 notes on the E string!”
“That’s great son!”
The next week rolls around.
“What did you learn at your second bass lesson son?”
“Well dad, I learned the first 1…2…3…4…5 notes on the A string!”
“That’s great son!”
The next week rolls around.
“What did you learn at your third bass lesson son?”
“I blew it off I had a gig.”
well what do you know… on saturday they asked me ![]()
they were playing the local pub and just before blitzkrieg bop they called me up to swap places with my mate. im pleased i’d had a few beers, and even more pleased that the crowd had too so they wouldnt hear my nervous mistakes ![]()
its all downhill from here ![]()
im just about to finish the course, got one more lesson left, then i’ll do some of the extras including playing with a pick. ive enjoyed this last module, not so much the one before, i got a bit bored with the ‘counting rhythm’ one so its good to end on one where we choose the notes and try different rhythms and patterns.
its been a great course, well worth the money, and i think i’ll just keep repeating it.

well ive finished the course and been through a few of the masterclasses, ill finish them off shortly, but im left thinking what now?
i thought id maybe work through some of the 100 songs, but when i look at them its just the electronic bass lines, i was expecting them to be the rest of the song too so we can play the bass along with the song, a bit like the workouts? am i missing something?
so whats my goal? i think its to recognise the notes on the fretboard quicker, and to be able to jam with mates and if they tell me theyre moving to G major say, have some idea of a few notes to noodle along to.
i’ll definitely do the course again, maybe with a pick this time, maybe not. but i just want something else to do alongside the course.
i believe theres a few drum tracks somewhere isnt there, i could maybe do some chord progressions to those, but as i say, i was hoping for maybe some songs with missing bass that we fill in using tabs and just learn them.
thanks
This is the important question, and only you can answer it.
What do you want to do?
Play with other people (just jamming)
Perform with a band
Write original songs
Be able to play covers of particular songs
Play along with favorite songs
???
unfortunately i dont have many mates who play instruments, so jamming opportunities are seldom, i just have a couple of mates who i can jam with now and then. no chance of a band. so…
“i think its to recognise the notes on the fretboard quicker, and to be able to jam with mates and if they tell me theyre moving to G major say, have some idea of a few notes to noodle along to.”
oh and play along with favourite songs too. which is why i asked if there was a resource on here that had the songs without bass, maybe with the correct tabs so i could get started. id be interested in experimenting with my own notes on some of the chords too, mix it up a bit.
thanks
I imagine they can’t be distributed via the course because of copyright. But you can find a lot of “no bass” tracks on YouTube, and you can make your own with tools like Moises.
Personally I paid for Moises because I end up using it a lot. Not just to remove bass from songs, but change tempo, loop sections, even change key - for example if a song is in D-standard tuning I’ll pitch it up to E-standard so I don’t have to re-tune my bass to practice it. It always sounds a little funny but it’s more convenient. Sometimes I’ll even use it to isolate the bass to hear it better, or bring the drums forward. And I can access the tracks in it from any PC and even my phone, which is great for when I use my headphone amp.
It’s super useful.
thats possible, but forgetting the ‘no bass’ element, there are 3 full songs with music in the ‘full songs module’ so why not use this format in the 100 songs? it would seem to be more user friendly than the electronic bass lines with no accompaniment in the ‘100 songs’ section.
its no biggie, i can practice other stuff, i suppose it just left me a little deflated thinking “right, i can get my teeth into a few of these now” and then hearing those ‘songsterr type’ electronic lines. in fact thinking about it, songsterr does in fact have a semblance of the actual song with the rest of the music included albeit electronically, the 100 songs dont, its purely electronic bass lines, nothing else.
thanks
This is exactly the reason.
If you go on the official BassBuzz discord channel or post in the 50 First Songs section, someone can help with exaclty what @sadexpunk is looking for.
Other than that, someone could start a thread where you request help with bass-less versions of songs.
The biggest advantage of the 100 Fist Songs is actually having clear accurate tabs for those songs. That’s something that can become very frustrating when searching the internet.
The 100 songs were all done from scratch by @JoshFossgreen and @gio. To my knowledge, only one error has ever been found in those tabs and Josh fixed it immediately.
I think maybe that’s a different list.

i know theres a lot of love for mark and talkingbass on here, this morning i was sent a link to a course from luke at becomeabassist, the ‘critical mass bass line challenge’, which would appear to be a course discounted to $29 and lifetime access.
it looks interesting, anyone got any experience of this?
thanks
I really like Luke. I actually found him before I found Josh and have watched a ton of his YouTube stuff and went through his technique course. I also purchased the Playing by Ear course at a super discount during Black Friday but haven’t gone through the whole thing yet. For $29 I’d say it’s worth a shot!
thats a good enough endorsement for me, im in ![]()
ill let you know how it goes…
I finished the course and now I’m surprisingly demotivated to start working through the songs, etc. I’m also struggling with what/how to practice now that I don’t have the structure of Josh’s lessons. Suggestions on how to transition to self guided?
If you just finished - go back into the course and try the stuff you found hard again. This will help build confidence.
