Backup Bass - Keep or Upgrade (Sidegrade?)

That color, too…

Price is better than MM. More expensive than a Sire Z7 which I think would be the closest comparison based on pickup config.

A Z7 would be an excellent choice. Tons of upgraded quality and features. Marketed by other brands, it would easily sell for at least twice as much as Sire offers it.

Sounds like a perfect way to go. The Fender style PBass and JBass are classics just like owning a Tele and a Strat. You can never got wrong owning either or both.

I tested that Reverend today. It was super nice except for one fatal flaw.

If I slapped or did percussive muting, it let out a horrendously loud POP. Like pulling the plug out of a jack with the amp still on. Got quieter if I turned the pickup selector back towards the bridge. It didn’t look like the string was contacting the neck pickup, but I can’t be certain.

I think I might go back with a ruler and screwdriver to see if maybe the pickup height was the issue…

Yeah this sounds like pickup height.

I’m kicking myself for not having thought of that while at the store.

I bet a big blade pup like that really needs careful adjusting for slap.

You are absolutely correct. Those jazz bombs are also hot enough that dropping it (in my case so that I can pick more cleanly) doesn’t make it too quiet.

Do you own a Reverend bass? How do you like it?

I really like the feel and tone. Aside from the POP issue, my only sort of qualm is the lack of onboard EQ. Not being able to mid-scoop handily. But I suppose that’s what foot or amp EQ are for.

I do, I’ve got a Triad (the one with the 3 Jazz pickups). I like it a lot actually. It’s a fairly aggressive sounding bass. At least on mine, the pickup selector and tone knob do a lot of lifting and you can get just a ton of different tones out of them. I go from something like a P bass like single coil sound in the 1 position to just the gnarliest aggressive punk rock sound in the 5 position. One tip with the tone knob, dial it to about 75% and theres like a sweet spot there that you get a really nice sound with.

Thanks. Appreciate the input and experience.

The Triads look really sweet. If this particular example ends up being a dud, and lowering the neck pup doesn’t fix it, I’m going to be looking very strongly at a Reverend bass in the future.

That sounds about like my impression testing it out. I didn’t have the EQ control I do with my Ibanez, but I felt like I was getting more tonal variety with just pickup sweep and tone control. If I want to set thing up more specifically, I’m probably running effects anyway.

Also, I’m in Ohio, and we get up to Toledo several times each year. Might have to swing by their headquarters sometime.

I tried lowering the pickups…

…and unfortunately I now need to put up with my wife rolling her eyes at me for bringing yet another bass home…

They have identical electronics.

Both the P5 and P5R have the ‘Marcus Vintage-Fat Precision Revolution Set’ pups. Sire changed the P5 pickups when the P5R was introduced (some reviews found the low end lacking with the original pickups) in 2022.

I was referring to the pups on the P5 prior to the P5R.

Maybe that wasn’t clear. The pickups changed in 2022 so the pickups have been the same for a long time, and the OP was looking to make a purchase of new gear, I think

But it’s a Reverend! Praise the Lord (of bass…Lemmy!).
