I’ve seen all the replies and don’t agree with any of them–“do this–do that–don’t do this–don’t do that.” Get that instrument to a competent luthier and belly-up the money. It’s idiotic to perform “work” that seemed like a good idea at the time only to end up with a wallhanger. Remember, the most expensive instrument you’ll ever own is the one you can’t play.
Yeah no. We also learn by doing. If it’s an inexpensive instrument then learning to do things yourself has value. Even if you make a mistake you’ve learned something.
How do guitar techs get competent @oldjohn1951? They make mistakes.
If it IS an inexpensive instrument, and you have the time, some basic skills and tools (even if they came from Temu) and studied up with youtube videos, then go for it. On the other hand, if this instrument is valuable and you want the best for it, then again, belly-up the money and get it done professionally. I’d rather have some issue corrected than have a ridiculous rebuild job. I’ve seen it way too many times. More often than not the answer to the “issue” in question is way different than what you thought it was.
The original post was talking about a Kay bass. Those things were inexpensive mass produced instruments.
So you and I agree. Have a go and learn something.
If it’s a Fodera maybe find someone professional.
This thread is talking about replacing a bridge and a nut. If you’re a little bit handy the worst that can happen is you have to try a few times to get the nut right, and you have some visible screw holes or need to refinish the body. This is a great learning opportunity, you’d have to really screw up to damage anything seriously, and the bass is unplayable now so it’s easy to improve from here!
I just strongly support people trying to learn new skills and work on their own instruments.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand … modding is FUN!!!
Amen to that!
It’s really not rocket science to set up a bass properly and fix minor issues. Like that bridge.
Just got it finished!
Put all the information in a new post here-
Gee, that’s a most interesting URL. I never heard of a guitar fetish before. Oh well, to each his own.
