It’s not just about the cost to them to do it though. It makes your bass stand out more.
BTW, not sure non-British understand what “squids” means.

Quid = 1 pound
Squid = Multiple pounds (but not all of the UK talks like that)

Ah, OK, so “quid” is really never used in any plural form, i.e., “500 quid” and not “500 quids”!?!
And “squids” is a bit like rhyming slang, where a foreigner really never knows what you guys actually talk about!?

Great thing about an expensive bass is exclusivity (unlikely to run into another person with it) and they tend to retain their value better than cheaper instruments because they are made of good materials and high quality construction. Keep it long enough and the value goes above what you paid. Mine is the same price as that, but I consider it an investment and something I’ll get enough use out of to make it a good purchase. I take the price, divide it by how many hours I think I’ll use it and then that usually makes me feel better about the purchase.

I would go along with your last point in particular, @JT, but it is the 3500 down right now that would still really hurt…

I feel your pain. I don’t think it’s a purchase anyone (well… maybe some millionaire or someone) would take lightly. Not something I would normally do either. Might even regret it later. Especially if I don’t put in those planned hours!

Warwick Masterbuilt Streamer LX 5, 35" scale with custom pickups (P/J, the LX5 is normally J/J), with LED fret dot inlays.
Not for sale (i.e. unique, made for a store here in Japan, not sure if they are still selling it or not), going by the price sheet it would not be less than $6k retail though. So figure the store got it wholesale and would probably sell it for $4k or so.
Unfortunately 5.2kg - can’t win them all

Don’t think I haven’t entertained that thought… problem is the Mayones is still twice as much as my friend’s bass… 
I guess it will be a looooong time before I am able and willing to break the USD2000 ceiling for a bass…
PS: however, what I intend to do is take the opportunity of being in Chicago in about a month’s time and visit Chicago Music Exchange at that time - they have, among any other basses, the Mayones on display
