Right but we started with “busy bass players” and jokes about playing above the 12th fret and now we’re discussing needing to consider arrangement and be intentional in decisions about what to play. This is a much more interesting topic!
Haha…it’s the rabbit hole of playing bass. But as I’ve been saying and as Beer Baron reinforces in his post it’s always gonna be about serving the song. In some genre another instrument may be holding down the groove which allows the bassist more freedom to explore the fretboard in his role. As long as it serves that song it works.
We could indeed create another thread on this topic alone if others would like to explore it to a greater degree. All it takes is one of us to do that.
Here we go…
Sorry for the late reply. I think it’s pretty funny that threads just tend to derail into completely different directions than the original purpose. All I can say is that I’ve been greatly helped by a bunch of knowledgeable people here, so I guess anyone with the same issue stumbling upon this thread would find their answers withing the first 2 dozen replies or so.
Thanks for the reply, I remember watching that video kinda absent mindedly some time ago, but now I’ll make sure to give it a rewatch and pay actual attention
Much appreciated
there are definitely a ton of people who hate it. but also, it’s what happens around here and i am a willing participant. i kind of look at it like i would rather have a forum full of easily distracted people oooooh what’s that shiny thing than a forum full of belligerent a-holes that shout everyone down (hmm where could i be talking about i wonder).
Oh man, I love Snarky Puppy!
I for one am here for it. These threads meander in ways similar to how my deeply ADHD brain works. Nevermind that the people here are awesome, friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming, I’m here for the meandering.
it does seem like we take a perverse pride in doing it. a lot
100% this. I was also one of those kids on Ritalin in school. This is way more comfortable than having to force myself to attempt (and fail) to stay on the topic.
To be fair, all the parts are written by Tobias and he readily admits to writing the bass parts with a guitarist’s mentality. Fun as hell to play!
Sure, but that’s a false choice. Those aren’t the only two options.
And yet, here we are, having a discussion about internet forum dynamics in a topic originally started about a bass being too loud on the certain harmonics of E

Could you possibly be “Talk.”…ing about that “Bass” forum many of us prefer not to frequent. And I’ll also apologize for being part of the hijack. Many pardons to the OP.
hmm…
