I imagine if one wanted the rigid type then yes. I was thinking of the collapsible type which are easy to fold and pack when empty. Maybe something like this.
The TRX looks interesting!

I like it for some things, but I donāt get that satisfying muscle fatigue at the end of a workout in some areas (chest and legs come to mind first) the same way that more traditional weights give. A plug for TRX though, one of my favorite exercises in my routine is the reverse row, think the opposite of a push up. Great dynamic exercise for back and biceps.
You can do push-ups wide / low, hands in trx and on one foot to be more unstable.
Also a weight vest helps - on the road a filled backpack would sufficeā¦
I should start working out again. I was in pretty good shape before the pandemic and I lost it all
Maybe we should start a BassBuzz Midlife Crisis Make-Yourself-In-Great-Shape-Again challenge?
We could also create little orange (not red) bass caps
You can get rigid instrument stands for bass you use while standing (so no strap needed)
@Al1885 posted this pic once to show an example, so he may know more if you were interested in something like this
Thanks @g13dip. Itās really cool. Itās really well built and quite convenient. Thereās only 2 brands that I know both are very very pricey. Mine is about $350, it comes with the tripod. The other one is MBrace thatās $320 but no tripod stand. The K&M tripod is definitely top quality heavy duty built.
This is Mbrace. Love how it looks too.
I agree with the posts above to see a specialist, like a PT. But as far as a workout routine is concerned, you want something is well rounded that hits all areas of your body. With cardio and strength training. Strength training is really important for maintaining bone density. It also helps maintain muscle balance. I was struggling with shoulder pain for a long time. Months and months. Kept trying to focus on the shoulder and finally gave up and went back to squats, bench, kettle bells, pushups, and running. After a couple months of that, no more shoulder pain.
Absolutely and Iād also throw yoga on that list as well. Iāve found it does a few things. Some bass related, some just general well being. It does things for strengthening support muscles that weights just donāt hit, and the focus on self I find helpful to force myself to relax when something Iām learning is difficult / intense / frustrating. Iāve become better at reading myself and adjusting, I guess.
running
A great alternative to running is high intensity (āTabataā) jump rope!
Yes for sure. Yoga is great.
I agree. Any Tabata workout really. But I do think that running is a skill that every human should try to be proficient at. You never know when youāll need to run.
You never know when youāll need to run.
I am the worst (long distance) runner ever, unfortunately! I tried and I failed. Jump rope is ok for me (after I practiced every day after dark under a highway bridge, far away from civilisation, not to get caughed in appearing uncool :-))
If there is a situation where I need to run, Iām doomed (or call a cab).
You never know when youāll need to run.
I ran quite a bit when I was younger (and thinner). These days though, if you see me running youād better join me, because I assure you itās not by choice.
Not to say that Iām a good runner. I used to be as a teen. Then I did a lot of distance in my 30ās, but very slowly. All through my 30ās I weighed over 240 lbs. but trying to get back at it again.
Personal Trainer and hack bassist here. FACE PULLS on a cable machine work the muscles that are under load when you have a heavy bass slung on a strap. They help pull your shoulder joints back into proper alignment. I also like Romanian (stiff-legged) Deadlifts to strengthen and stretch the lower back and hamstrings. You donāt have to go heavy on either of these, and please get a proper tutorial if youāre not sure you can do them safely.
This is all so great, thank you! Had no idea Iād spark such a varied conversation with that one.
Well up for more strength training, so thanks @MarkeeMark for those specifics. I canāt afford gym membership though so Iāll check out if thereās an adaptation to make for olympic rings which I already have and use for some strength and stretching.
Iāve recently started running and feeling the different back muscles engaging (and aching) has been educational⦠Really fascinating actually. And I like HIIT and body weight stuff especially. I have a couple of kettle bells now (had a few people recommend them )so I want to learn to use those properly.
Not sure I have the brain capacity to start again playing leftie but itād definitely be interestingā¦
