Haha, have you tried playing it all the way through (in the original tempo)?? Your fingers will fall off less than halfway through

Maybe we should start somewhere a little more “comfortable”?? Not all the way towards “With or Without You” (even though that is challenging as well as you have to be very consistent), but maybe somewhere in between!?!

Unless you want this to disrupt the entirety of your 30 day challenge I recommend a different choice

It was just a suggestion.

Not a prob, @studio!

However, I think what you suggested here is really more what we would refer to as a “cover”, i.e., play an already established bassline to a tune, where the original bassline has been “removed”. And, we have a nice thread for that that @terb had established, here: Post your covers!

On the other hand, what we thought you had in mind here, was to provide some kind of (generic) backing track and then let people come up with their own basslines. We had tried this before a few times, as @Vik mentioned, but that could certainly be consolidated in a thread like yours here.

Anyway, it is your thread - your rules

PS: by the way, when I say “we” I kinda assume I am talking for the majority here, which, really, I shouldn’t do…

@joergkutter I am aware of the covers thread and when I get a bit better I will be posting in there.
The Bassline od the month thread is similar in that we do a cover but what is different is it is a challenge to all to post there best effort at the chosen song in the hope that it will encourage people to have a go.
Ultimately, it will benefit the covers thread as more and more people get comfortable with posting video/audio of themselves.
The covers thread is singular participation and the BLOM thread is mass participation.
That was my thinking anyway.
There is no reason why it cannot be incorporated into the covers thread. We just suggest a cover at the start of each month in the hope that people will take up the challenge.

Cool, @studio - let’s give it a shot!

And… good luck with your challenge, of course

Right, so we just need to pick a song to cover
A simple one

I feel like this should be connected here…

I have a suggestion for the Basline of the month for us all to learn.
Message in a bottle by the police

And with the bass removed

Whattaya think?

“Roxanne” by the Police from B2B Mod 9 or so was so much fun, so, yeah, “Message in a Bottle” gets my vote!

Maybe @JoshFossgreen could do a quick tutorial on how to play it.
It is not that difficult to be honest. You can play it like Sting or there are loads of ways that you can simplify it so it is suitable for all comers.

Who knew this song was so complex?

I can’t help wondering is the writers of songs intended all this when they wrote it or people are just finding meaning in just a nice tune.
Bit of both I suspect with this as all three members of the police are very accomplished musicians but…
Anyway, enjoy.

Nice find, @studio! My guess is he is over-interpreting this just a bit… That said, Sting is known to use “unusual” harmonic ideas in his songs (at least, unusual in the common pop context), and I would wager he made the choices he did here sub-consciously regarding to what feeling he wanted to convey. In that sense, the reviewer here might be on to something…

What a great song, though - one of my all-time favorites (within the body of work by The Police only surpassed by “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” perhaps).

Isolated Bass?

Here is my first attempt

I would be interested if the tracks were limited to 90-120 seconds. I would participate if the project fit my musical taste, and simply pass if it was outside of my taste. I have the equipment needed, and can upload the finished product to my website.

Very nice, Paul @studio:slight_smile:

(gotta love that logo on your bass, too! )

Cheers, Joe
