Hi All
On a sax forum I frequent there is a song of the month and many of the members practice and then post their efforts for others to enjoy.
Do you think this would work here?
As in record yourself and post the audio/video?
Like the ‘Post your Covers’ thread?
@Mark_D Yes, like the covers thread however, this one differs in one respect.
Every month a bassline is suggested and lots of people learn and upload there effort.
It motivates people to learn new basslines and basslines they might not of thought of before.
You could have a Beginner, Intermediate and Badass category so people can progress.
Suggestions are made and one is picked. A backing beat may be uploaded for people to play along with or you find your own.
It could be part of the covers thread. We just suggest a cover and invite others to have a go.
That sort of thing
It’s a nice idea but I doubt many people are used to videoing themselves and then posting the vids on YouTube.
Hopefully others will chip in and say I’m wrong
It doesn’t need to be on youtube. Could be soundcloud or similar
If it encourages people to learn how to record themselves then that is a bonus. Listening to yourself play is a valuable learning aid
We sort of started doing this a few months ago, and some of us posted on Soundcloud or YT. We had a backing track, and each person posted their own unique bassline. Here’s the thread: (I think it was originally started over a year ago, and, when I saw it, thought it deserved to be bumped back to the top) If you’d like to post a backing track, it would be fun to do this again, and see what everyone comes up with!
yeah @Vik and we even don’t need to create a backing track from scratch, we could choose a free one (for example on the YT channels) and all use the same track
Good idea… but, maybe just edit it down to a “manageable” length - max 2 minutes perhaps!?!
yes, good idea
I don’t know how long it will take me to get what I need to participate but I still want this.
I’m in.
OK, Here goes
My suggestion for bassline of the month for November 2019 is
Billy Bloody Jean
So what’s the crack then, people gotta try and record themselves playin’ it?
It’s Fukin nearly five minutes long.
Yer ‘avin a laugh.
I thought it was gonna be 2 mins tops?
Haha, have you tried playing it all the way through (in the original tempo)?? Your fingers will fall off less than halfway through
Maybe we should start somewhere a little more “comfortable”?? Not all the way towards “With or Without You” (even though that is challenging as well as you have to be very consistent), but maybe somewhere in between!?!
Unless you want this to disrupt the entirety of your 30 day challenge I recommend a different choice
It was just a suggestion.
Not a prob, @studio!
However, I think what you suggested here is really more what we would refer to as a “cover”, i.e., play an already established bassline to a tune, where the original bassline has been “removed”. And, we have a nice thread for that that @terb had established, here: Post your covers!
On the other hand, what we thought you had in mind here, was to provide some kind of (generic) backing track and then let people come up with their own basslines. We had tried this before a few times, as @Vik mentioned, but that could certainly be consolidated in a thread like yours here.
Anyway, it is your thread - your rules
PS: by the way, when I say “we” I kinda assume I am talking for the majority here, which, really, I shouldn’t do…
@joergkutter I am aware of the covers thread and when I get a bit better I will be posting in there.
The Bassline od the month thread is similar in that we do a cover but what is different is it is a challenge to all to post there best effort at the chosen song in the hope that it will encourage people to have a go.
Ultimately, it will benefit the covers thread as more and more people get comfortable with posting video/audio of themselves.
The covers thread is singular participation and the BLOM thread is mass participation.
That was my thinking anyway.
There is no reason why it cannot be incorporated into the covers thread. We just suggest a cover at the start of each month in the hope that people will take up the challenge.
