Basswood on bass?

yep and at the end of the day if you don’t like the tone of a bass i can pretty much guarantee you still would not like it if it was made out of a different wood.

This. When I built my P, this is what I was looking for. The body I bought from Warmoth was alder, which I found to be softer than I expected. For instance, I didn’t even have to drill out the pickguard holes. After I located the holes during the mock up, I uses an automatic centerpunch thinking it would prevent the drill bit from walking, but punch went fairly deep, so during assembly, I just bore down on the screwdriver and let them self tap (was not using an electric drill to drive the screws , but a hand held screwdriver).
