So far I like the course, but I just started last week. I give a more detailed feedback once I am further into the material.
I do have a little wish though, would it be possible, that the video player remembers my quality settings? I have to set it to 1k since 2k and 4k do lag and rebuffer all the time, but the default auto starts back at 4k/2k every video. Its nice that the lessen content is in small chunks, but that also means I have to click settings > quality > 1k > back > back every video, that is a little annoying ![]()
Dunno, but Iād recommend you to put that particular question into the discussion section in the course. Josh or Gio do usually answer very quickly.
Beginner to Badass is a great course! It gets you playing music right out of the gate, which was very motivating for me. Josh is the rare teacher who can get the information across in an effortless (and humerus) way. I canāt wait for the next course! Maybe Badass to Badder Ass or The Badass Strikes Back ? *Josh if you use these, I want a discount ![]()
This time I really learned what I needed.
My first attempt was in 1990 when I took some private, in-person lessons. I was 21 years old. After that, I only bought another bass in 2021 during the pandemic. I tried the StudyBass online course for a while, which is very good and free (I thought it was fair to pay $10 for a few months), but I couldnāt find the discipline on my own to find the balance between motivation, repetition, and increasing difficulty that Josh offers in the B2B course.
I started on August 2nd and, excluding a few days of absence due to health reasons, I managed to do lessons every day, for 15 to 30 minutes a day, and finished module 15 on December 11th.
What I liked most was the attention Josh gives to the development process and, as I mentioned above, the balance between motivation, progress, and attention to detail.
I also ended up reading the books Talent Code (Daniel Coyle) and Standing in the Shadows of Motown. You can see the Talent Code in the method Josh uses. StudyBass also conveys a similar message, about patience and consistent dedication with a gradual increase in difficulty.
Iām very satisfied and it was worth every penny I paid for the course. Now I truly consider myself a musician.
Thank you, Josh!
No one here has a clue how badly I was sucking at trying to play bass. I had taken some lessons from a teacher who clearly thought I should find a different interest. I tried a book that promised glory for absolute beginners, thought I was doing great when I finished it, until I played a bit for a friend from high school who is a touring bass player, His face as he tried to find something nice to say, told me everything I needed to know. I sucked. I took the course, same time as I started a soul sucking, energy crushing job. Took awhile to finish. Played a couple of tunes for that old pal of mine, the huge grin on his face, told me everything I needed to know. He said,āwow, look at you go, youāve come a long ways, well done.ā I loved this course, and Iām still loving it and the Youtube videos, Still working it all, and still progressing and having fun. So yea the course is allright, lol, na itās frkn awesome. If I would suggest anything, it would be ā¦. nope I donāt think I can suggest anything, so rare for me, lol. Oh I know, downloadable videos, Due to my job, I was often in areas with no internet service, missed a lot of opportunities to continue with the course. I donāt know if thatās the best idea all around, but for some people that would be nice.
Iām all for the Bad Ass Strikes Backā¦.. u know, like if we are votingā¦.
Iāve just completed this course, and I heartily recommend it for all of the following reasons:
-
Josh is a great teacher. He is obviously very experienced teaching in-person and understands the challenges of each lesson. I was impressed by how often his comments exactly addressed a question I had.
-
The course is very well designed, with an emphasis on playing and having fun with the bass, to quickly get you a level where you can jam with other musicians. Youāll make rapid progress as the lessons often seamlessly combine different skills. For instance, learning to play up high on the neck at the same time as you begin some simple improvisation.
-
The course revolves around playing to popular songs. Fun, right? The songs span time periods and genresā¦no matter who you are youāll recognize most of them, and the list probably includes some of your favorites.
-
The right amount of music theoryā¦enough to enable you to communicate and collaborate without getting into the weeds.
-
The videos are polished. Frets/strings of interest are highlighted in post-production to make it obvious whatās being played. Animated highlights on charts make it easy to follow and keep up. So helpful!
-
Josh is funny! There are lots of little jokes, asides, puns, spontaneous goofiness, etc. to keep things fun and engaging. And when heās being serious, Joshās deep voice is easy on the ears.
-
Extras! Printed resources; jam tracks to download; a hundred play-along songs, with tabs, sorted easy to less-easy. What a deal!
Thanks Josh. Super glad I found this course!!!
Wow, what a journey! Keep in mind that comments below are from a 66 yr. old who had absolutely zero bass guitar experience before taking the course (but did learn piano as a kid). First and foremost, I nominate Josh as the bass guitar teacher GOAT (sports fans know what that means). Never, ever thought I would remain interested enough to continue an online course but Josh really does make you feel like itās a true one-on-one lesson. Kudos, props and all that to Josh and the BadAss course!
So, started in Nov. 2025 and just finished - just about one lesson/day, 5x/wk. And, yes, usual struggles here and there in the beginning and middle modules but was able to āpassā the majority of slow workouts after some extra practice. I must admit I had very lofty expectations when starting the course that I would miraculously become Flea upon completion (haha). Alas, the final couple Modules did me in as I simply did not have the skill and knowledge (fingering, plucking, scales, notes on the frets, etc.) to play any advanced improv - which is entirely on me! No doubt about it, there is no substitution for practice, practice, practice in between lessons if your goal is to become fluent on the strings. Nevertheless, I now feel truly empowered to continue on this journey and look forward to doing those daily exercises, course reviews and investing the time. Thanks for the motivation, Josh! Cheers!
