If I’m really honest I would say that I don’t hear that much difference between all those modern class-D amps. Sure, they all have a bit of tone coloring going on (some more then others) but they all sound “clean” imo. Full tube amps are a different story but those things are heavy…
Good cabinets and an amp with enough headroom will do the job for preserving those upper harmonics imo. At this point I would even say that the right cabinet matters more (for me at least).
Yeah. I am fully convinced that if I ever go live again it’s going to be through PA’s fronted by preamps and/or amp/cab sims. Amp sims though my monitors already sound better than any apartment-friendly bass amps would. I’m basically completely post-amp at this point
Yeah I kinda agree with your statement Howard. Right now I am comparing my mini-stack with amp head against my keyboard amplifier with preamp + cabsim pedal. My stack is about 400W in total and my keyboard amp is 30W stereo. The low-end representation is better on my stack but the tone is so much better at low levels on my keyboard amp. Bit tedious tbh
Another side of this is that if I ever play live again, there will need to be a PA anyway for everything else. So it just makes sense to try putting everything through it. So either the venue will have one, or I will need to bring it.
What I would not have in this case is monitoring. Which would be a bummer, but it’s how our band rolled before.
Yeah that would work fine, or regular 'phones DJ-style for that matter since I would be right by it. But my bandmate would need something too, so IEM probably better.
But it’s unlikely this will ever happen - no sign of my friend moving here, and not really interested otherwise.
I believe the Fearful (free plans) was the V1 of the Fearless, and he kept the improved version plans for himself to make some $. What that means, who knows? I did also like the ‘hand crafted’ help a small guy aspect, esp since the product is incredible. If I somehow ever need ‘stupid wattage’, I’d look at the Fearless 4x10, but that might never been needed.
