Daily practice routines

Hi everyone,

New to the Forum. Just went through the Billie Jean module and realized how much further I need to go. I am currently on the 3 month plan, and moved on to module 5 today. So should I just be focusing on finishing the modules every day, or should I be practicing on top of that? What are your thoughts?

Three months is an arbitrary timeline. Push for it if you’re feeling it. It’s more important that you’re having fun playing with where you’re at though imo. If you’d rather do a couple of lessons then pull up a song to learn, that’ll be time well spent imo. As long as you’re still putting fingers on strings, you’ll still be learning.

You should practice in a way that gives you the greatest sense of satisfaction.

When you finish a lesson, are you excited to start the next lesson? Or would you be more excited to learn a song or something else?

If you want to use your time to greatest effect, you are generally best working on a couple different things in roughly 15-30 minute chunks. Go until you hit your saturation point. Set the bass down. Take a five minute break. Come back and work on something completely different until you hit your saturation point again. Repeat.

  • 1-2 lessons
  • Learn new songs
  • Play along with songs you know and refine them
  • Practice improv to a backing track
  • Just picking up a bass and experimenting making noises

If you get stressed or it feels like work or a chore, go do something else (unless you are preparing for a rehearsal, gig, audition, etc.).
