Nee, I just like the color Orange? I’ve studied enough German to maddeningly stumble my way through Dutch enough to barely grasp meaning since they are so differently similar.
Sorry to veer off-topic. It’s funny what sticks in your brain. This was from an advertising campaign for Dommelsch in the 1990s. For whatever reason I was leafing through a Dutch magazine, saw it, and it has been floating around in my brain ever since.
After 30 years, I had to leap at the opportunity to finally use the phrase, even if it wasn’t in the original context. I can’t tell you what a relief that was!
Even further off-topic: One of the things I love about this forum is the international representation. So often, forums I’m on are dominated by the American viewpoint, and it’s refreshing to have a place where so many people from diverse backgrounds come together and play nicely.
Oh, I know exactly what you mean! I have a whole treasure trove full of funny and remarkable stuff I stumbled over - wordplays, dialog fragments, situations, pictures etc - that is just waiting to be let lose on humanity ^^
So - glad to be of any help. Let us know if there’s more where that game from! This is the place to be freeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Yeah, I also find the Americans very funny and like the opportunity to mansplain stuff from a more educated perspective and a foundation of thousands of years of history … in a well-meaning way
LOL! Now we’re talking. That’s a great piece of history though - in the end the Dutch ended up eating the f#cking tulip bulbs. I haven’t tried them, but I think they are not very tasty…
EDIT my last name, “van Hoven” comes from “hovenier”, in our case my ancestors were the gardeners of the king.
Part of my family is still in the Tulip mafia - we came back and are here to stay
Yes, really A+. Always good to know that people know about history, outside of their country!
For us Dutch the “Golden Century” ended with the Tulip mania (at least it was the start of the end). Otherwise we might still be a superpower now.
Imagine Holland, seeing eye to eye with the US, China and Russia!
Paradise on earth
Make Holland great again - buy more tulips!
PS I read an article about eating tulips. After the extended German holiday period in 40/45, many of them spending their vacation in Holland - so we had a 2nd occasion to eat quite a lot of tulip bulbs.
They really tasted like sh#t!
From what I remember, a lot of the credit for the Golden Century had to do with Dutch ship building at the time being so much more advanced than other European nations. I haven’t dug into a ton of Dutch history, but I do know quite a bit about British history and there are points where the 2 bump into each other in fun and interesting ways (William and Mary for instance).
Don’t tell anybody, cause we keep the image of being the “vrij & blij” (free & happy) country, but our wealth came mainly from the colonies and slave trade.
Everything else is a myth, unfortunately!
So me totally s#cked, in fact for a very long time (until after the 2nd world war).
I can think of quite a few countries that are built on slavery and treating the ‘natives’ appallingly! But not every country seems to accept the fact and act accordingly…
But let’s not get too political. You know, the rules!
We’re here for muuuuussssssssiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiic!
And - it’s time for one of my favourite YouTube clips again
