This is the first I’m realizing that there are different tension strings. When I’ve bought basses with low tension strings I’ve just assumed they were really old.
That’s a cool looking bass Wombat-metal. I’ll need to check out the Steve Harris set-up.
Is that Mudbucker a Fender pickup? I’ve always associated MudBuckers with Gibson/Epiphone.
The pickup is a Fender Wide Range humbucker. It’s a reissue of a classic bass. The mud comes from how close to the neck the pickup is.
It’s also a split coil
Seth Lover designed the classic humbucker for Gibson, and he he moved to Fender in the mid 60s and designed the wide range humbucker for Fender. They he hooked up with Seymour Duncan in the 70s. Seymour called him his “humbucking mentor”.
So the same lineage as Gibson.
The bass is really a p bass they call a Telecaster. It has the same body as a 51 p with the single coil, a 70s era P neck with the C shape and 41.3 mm nut, no fingerboard I can detect just all maple neck. I always wanted a Fender P and this is close enough for me
Squier also has a version. Which is a good bass in it’s own right
This might confuse people as “Mudbucker” is a specific term referring to a specific pickup, the Gibson EB-0, EB-2 and EB-3 neck pickup. The “Wide Range” pickup should sound very different (but may still be muddy due to being in a similar position. Humbucker neck pups are often muddy to some extent).
“Mudbucker style” is used to refer to other pickups like the EB’s mudbucker, but I don’t think a Fender Wide Range is. Your pickup should sound much much better IMO.
I see it referred to such in my internet searches quite often. But I can desist
Interesting. I’d thought the Wide Range was known for just that… a wide range
Being a Steve Harris fanboi, I have the trifecta: signature SH Fender P bass with his pups, Rotosound SH flatwound strings and the Tech21 SH stompbox. Even without the stompbox, the voicing is quite distinct. Here are some samples:
BTW, getting back to the topic, it’s the SH strings I was referring to, when mentioned the .110 E.
Can we have Maiden cover?
Great vids here. Thank you for furthering my bass education. The SPB pickups are meaty! I like the sound.
