Fender 9050 55-105 Flatwound strings

Yeah those are all great choices I’m sure. For now I’m gonna leave the Fenders on until they’re fully broken in and if I do keep liking them, I wouldn’t experiment more until and unless I also get a setup. At that time, I’ve been thinking of ordering these: La Bella Olinto Signature Flats, 4-String Set, 47-107 | Long & McQuade

Just for the random gauges and to see what the fuss about Olinto is about

One never really knows whether a particular string works for them or not until one tries them. That’s what you’re doing so you’re on the right path. Flats come in different “flavors” and “feels” as well.

Yep and I like that different strings give a different enough sound that for now at least, I don’t need to give in to much more expensive GAS to figure out what I like.

Side note, I think I might have to do a truss rod and/or bridge saddle adjustment, the intonation is off. I’m gonna give them a few more days to settle in, but I guess the extra tension will need some compensating. No big deal though

Pretty typical of what needs doing when changing string types and/or gauges.

Add that to the list of “live and learn” things for me, though I must admit all previous strings I tried, even though of slightly different types, were at least the same gauge and I didn’t have to do any adjustments. That might also be a testament to how well set up out of the box the Yamaha was, not sure.

My fretless came with flats on it. I have no idea what brand, etc. I liked the feel so much better than rounds that I ordered the Steve Harris flats (SH77 .050-.110) for my PJ bass and the La Bella Olinto flats (OSF4 .047-.107) for my HH bass. It has been interesting trying to figure out which strings fit which scale length basses. I’ll let you know if I can even tell any real difference between them.

Yeah, I’m especially curious about those Olinto ones, so please do let me know, thanks!

I use Fender 9120M Nylon Tapewound Bass Guitar Strings - .058-.110 Medium in my Squier Paranormal Jazz - Nice feel and the black string looks nice on the maple fingerboard. Been on going on two years-still retain the sound/tone. Just realized - no pix; I’ll correct that !

Since they arrived today, I was able to change the strings out before my daily practice…

The Steve Harris flats raised the action on the PJ bass. I was expecting that since they were replacing Rotosound RS77LDs, which had a much lower tension (according to the Rotosound literature). I’m going to fiddle with the setup tomorrow (and maybe for a few days) until I get the action back where I like it, then I can bring it back to rotation for daily practice for a better comparison. However, just from tuning them as part of the string change, it seemed to me that the Steve Harris flats are a little closer to the sound and feel of rounds than the Olinto:

  • they retain a little more of the higher pitch clank
  • less, but still noticeable hand-sliding-on-string sounds

The Olinto flats were almost a perfect swap for whatever rounds were on the HH bass before. The rounds came with the bass (bought used), so I don’t know what they were. Because the action (and intonation) was so close to what it was before, I practiced with this bass today. The Olinto flats felt and sounded great to my ear, and an improvement for my personal tastes compared to the rounds:

  • Very little hand-sliding-on-string sounds
  • Even less fret buzz
  • Thicker sound on front pickups, closer to a nice “P”

Comparing the feel of the three different sets of flats (Steve Harris on the PJ, Olinto on the HH, and whatever came with the fretless when I bought it)…
…all three sets of flats feel so much better to my fingertips than the rounds. Compared to each other, the Olinto are the smoothest to the touch, slightly smoother than the ones on the fretless; whereas the Steve Harris flats are much rougher. [If there isn’t some standard for this type of comparison, maybe I could try to compare it to sandpaper grit at some point in the near future - I don’t have any handy, and I don’t trust my memory for precise values.]

After I’ve played with them more (especially through headphones and not just through the PA), I’ll mention if anything else stands out in the way they sound individually and/or compared to each other.
