I will be trying your idea of building my own custom humbucker bass then
Just need to surf the web for a solid humbucker pickup since Fender only sells humbuckers for guitar, not bass ![]()

The Harley Benton HB-50 is very interesting, but alas, no short scale ![]()
Look at the EMG Humbuckers. They are really great … and I think they also have a passive model. Often you can get these 2nd hand, cheaply.
Many people are snobs about pickups, and EMG is a little like the IKEA of pickups, maybe, so nothing for the cool kids. But nevertheless they are very good - and noiseless, no matter which model!
They have a nice lego-like system, so no soldering!
EMG’s are generally outstanding. Not my favorite, but still really good.
The fact that it’s hollow body is probably a disadvantage in this case. The MM pickup is gonna dwarf any other tonal characteristics so you won’t get a lot of positives out of the resonance, but you will get the negatives (like, if it starts feedback-resonating like they can do).
It’s basically a Stingray that will be prone to feedback ![]()
The concept is interesting,…. it looks like a one-trick pony piece of furniture.
I’d be curious as how that mudbucker sounds on a maple platform instead of mahogany like the Gibson EB basses. I would expect that it wouldn’t have the mid-range of the Gibson.
