Maybe I should start a new thread for this, but I feel it’s related to the topic…
How to make flats sound good in terms of EQ/tone/SansAmp settings?
I love the feel of flats but the flat tone/sound makes me throw up in my mouth a little. Any recommendations to make it sound better? Sounding more like a upright?
EQ wise, I’d crank up the mids and set the treble higher than I normally would with brighter strings. You aren’t going to get a bright tone with them though. For folks that like flats, thats a feature. If you’re using them purely for feel, I went through the same thing. I just had to force myself to get used to rounds. Even then, GHS pressurewounds are my go to strings which feel wise are somewhere between a flat and roundwound. Elixir’s are nice too, I just threw a set on my Reverend last week (I love their guitar strings).
Maybe try the DiAdarrio half rounds, I have flats on a bass and I have the half rounds on my cheap fretless, they both are smooth however the half rounds DO have more mid and high tones than the flats. Somewhat leaning towards the round wound sound.
Question on the half rounds. D’Addario offers the ENR70 super light gauge, ENR71 regular light gauge and ENR72 medium gauge half rounds. Thomann doesn’t carry the ENR70s, but I wouldn’t want them anyway. The ENR71 gauges are .045-.065-.080-.100 and the ENR72 gauges are .050-.070-.085-.105. They’re long scale, but should work no problem on my short scale headless Ibanez EHB1000S. It came with .045-.065-.085-.105 gauge strings. I’m thinking that for a shorty, I’d be better off with the ENR72 medium gauge strings.
Any comments @sunDOG or others? Thanks in advance.
EDIT: And please don’t suggest buying one of each and using 2 strings from each set. I’m not going to spend close to 100 € to test half rounds.
I can’t even find Flat Wounds in my Bass’ gauge strings out here in Thailand🤣
I would love to get some on my Bass and test if I like the sound or not. Still debating if I want to risk taking my Bass to the shop and having them file the nut so I can try the ones that ARE available around here
Go onto Aliexpress and look at Alice brand, they call them fretless strings I think
I have them on a few basses and think they are good- they are also very inexpensive.
Thanks. I already went with some DR Legend Flatwounds. I didn’t have to do anything to my nut to get them to fit and I’m very happy with how they’ve turned out for me.
I want to try flatwounds because rounds tend to be rough on my fingers (possibly a technique issue on my end) but I don’t want to lose too much brightness. What are some of the brightest flatwounds that you’d recommend?
