Flat wound vs round wound strings

Ok but what I’m not seeing in that picture is a 90deg bend in the string. Where you insert it then bend it to set it against the tuning peg.

You don’t do that it’s more likely to slip.

It should look like this when you remove the string.

It’s not visable in the picture but it is there, I promise. It’s not clear as the felt has all come off. Anyway, none of that matters now as my all-black tapewounds just arrived so I’m going to restring this evening.

Cool. Good luck.

Got my tapewounds on and everything properly set up. They sound like a nice middle ground between flat and round. Not as thumpy as flats but not as twangy as rounds.

It’s not nice looking but it works. I attached a piece of an old string to it and it works. It’s a 5 year old set of Rotosound Jazz 77.

I know this is old but in a aituation like that I would strip the felt and put the ball in a smoothe jaw vise, loop the string and twist it as tight as I could. Once it is wound do a whip finish with some thread or fast flite bow string serving. If nothing similar, use thread of your choice. It looks like that was never finished correctly and it is surprising tthat it lasted as long as it did.

EDIT: Replies to the wrong post. You would need to straighten that exposed length then make a 90° bend to get it into the center hole on the tuner. Even if it is a bit short, one wrap ober then the rest under will lock it in place. The directions that came with the last set of flats show a figure eight in the tuner slot. Never saw that before.
