GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 1)

That’s rubbish. Lol

Well if it’s the classic (reissue) then double check the nut width one of the mom reissue has a whopping 1.75” nut width. I’d love that for sure but I also know that’s not everyone cup of tea.

Between the 2 I’d go with the gold anodized Pickguard. I don’t worry about pickup that much. Unless I have them side by side I won’t be able to tell the difference. Although the quarter pounder would feel different because of faster attack.

Thanks! Good point! I just double checked and the RW has a 1.75" while the Standard a 1.625" or 44.5mm vs 41.3mm. I had a 43mm G&L and I liked it. The two basses I have are 39mm and wider necks have their own thing I really like. GAS tells me to go for the RW because I like it but it is the most expensive option. The least expensive is the Quarter Pounder PU for my Squire. It’s the PJ Set.

I have that exact pickup in my Warmoth P/J. Awesome awesome pickup. You’ll love it. Can sound like old Motown or give some great slap tone with the twist of a knob.

@T_dub got one and contacted me before when he’s looking for the nut for that.

Thanks! As far as I have seen comparisons those were the one’s I liked most. They could really make much more out of bass I do like a lot, particularly with Rotosound flats or DR rounds at the moment. This GAS attack is partially founded on the excuse that I’d like to have a third bass with rounds but the way you describe it the Quarter Pounders on the Squier could enable from classic vintage to classic P-Bass rock tone.

I think because you’ve worked so hard to complete the 50 song challenge you should buy the bass the JMJ is modeled on i.e a 1966 Mustang. Go on treat yourself!

You guys aren’t helping  They have one at the local brick and mortar that I’ve played on numerous occasions now. I dropped in there on lunch yesterday to mess around with it.

Mustang!

Just my opinion, but as a playable instrument I would rather have the JMJ than the period Mustang. The 60s version will have the vintage narrow tall frets and I find the modern medium jumbo frets more comfortable.

That’s a good one.

I found myself liking the opposite to your take. I love narrow tall fret as they are more comfortable and definitely easier to maintain.

While I like JMJ a lot but couldn’t help thinking unless it’s a nice relic I’d probable go with either the Squier then mod or American performer because you can definitely score a good to mint used for either the same or slightly less than JMJ and definitely better balance with the fluted tuners.

I have narrow tall on my new Fender (the name I settled for the Telecaster Bass because it ain’t a telecaster - it’s a 51p body and neck with a humbucker pickup). Anyway, I noticed with the narrow tall, I have to be more precise with the fretting, the medium jumbo are more forgiving.

Also noticed there is one tone if you are on the fret and another tone on the strings if you fret at around 3/4s. So that’s kinda cool. I don’t dislike the narrow tall at all, just need to pick up my fretting game a touch.

That all being said, it might be possible that I have a mustang on order

Nice!

I’ve always like what Lee Sklar said about having the Mandolin frets on all of his basses I have one of his Warwick and I absolutely love the way it feels.

You are right med/ jumbo is very forgiving and low. That said playing chords and notes at the dusty ends can be challenging with all of the fat frets, :joy:

My JINO bass has the narrow tall frets and I get along with them. Not sure this is a con in my case.

You win the Internet for today. Congratulations!

I don’t know that it is a con either, I didn’t do a good job in pointing out that’s it’s a fundamental difference in how the two basses play. I think the average player would be more accustomed to the medium jumbo, that’s not to say the narrow tall isn’t without it’s charms.

Forgot to mention that’s a Squire and will need to mod. Waiting on the bass so I can measure the pickups because as you know, they are not standardized.

My plan in the Squier mustang mod is the
Lolar pickup
Stellartone Tone styler

The tonestyler is pretty interesting
