GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

Love the Anagram. Been especially obsessed with the drive options and some of the new ones introduced with the marketplace. And then this Empress Drive comes out and it’s all over the internet. Certainly don’t need it but I want one!

I finally got a focusrite and am still trying to figure out the recording side of things and I’ll start on that as soon as I stop playing with the drums in the DAW I got with it.

I’ve been trying to stick to only getting new gear with progress but disposable income and shinies equals bad choices. However, I thought it doesn’t count as GAS if it’s a Guitar…right? So got a cheapy Harley Benton SC-500 starter kit to see how the other side lives. In my head it’s better than drums..the neighbours wouldn’t like me buying drums I think.

Not entirely sure this counts, but it’s the first new thing I’ve acquired since buying my bass - I upgraded my strap from the crappy, under 2” strap that kept digging into me to a 3.5” levy that’s easy to adjust and oh my God it is so much more freaking comfortable to play now. I don’t immediately want to quit after 30 minutes just to ease the pain in my neck, back and shoulder.

I don’t think fixing a simple ergonomic issue counts, unless you start collecting them, or justifying why you need more.

My GAS has begun!! My 1st pedal, it produces really nice 60’s and 70’s vintage tones. So I’m now on the slippery pedal slope…

I have enrolled to a Hungarian online bass course, and met the teacher in person, showing him what I believe should be improved (left hand too “strongly” fretting down the notes, not relaxed as I believe should be, even though I have improved by much lighter right hand plucking but still far away).

He showed me how he believes I can achieve the left hand position / grip / order, but also mentioned why not to aim for lighter gauge strings. I have started this process by installing 40-100 Sandberg stainless steel set (that was expensive here) on my white Aerodyne (and played the weekend gig with those, awesome sound, details in another thread I believe called like “from bedroom to the stage”). But again pretty expensive to play around so I have ordered a few (cheaper) sets, 2x Warwick + 2x HB + 1x Daddario and 1x Roto66, altogether cheaper than the one set of Sandberg  :

Now there’s a Rockbass I need to sell, installed the Warwich to that, wasn’t impressed with the touch, but today I have installed the Harley Benton 40-95 stainless steel to my (recently acquired but forgot to mention earlier) 1991 MIJ Squier P and man it feels and sounds fantastic, and costs about 20% of any “brand” types (35% of the shown cheap Roto66 set). Was afraid of the too “thin” sound and turns out is has proper lows. So far - so good :sign_of_the_horns:

First pic of the above mentioned MIJ Squier as unboxed (box was damaged but bass only had the signs of wear I expected upon Japanese seller’s pictures), I had to remove the pickup cover tho - so uncomfortable:

A good strap makes a difference, so it counts in my book

I love my cushioned lekato strap for my bass and I got one for the guitar as well. I already have a lot of strain on my left shoulder from archery I don’t need a strap digging into the muscle for ages.

Warwick Red stainless are the worst strings I have ever played, no exaggeration. They totally suck.

That’s literally the first thing that came to my mind, and I’ve never tried Harley Benton string, :joy:

Hey How was Rockville? I saw a little hail storm went through Friday? (No pun intended, lol)

Well now I know - but had to try for like 10USD / less than 9EUR for the package.

And they do suck

…. meanwhile the HB set (purchased for 13USD / 11EUR, now for US markets it’s only 10USD today as I’ve checked, link below) is pretty nice so far after half a day only, will take it to rehearsal today and report back if my opinion changes.

This is it: HB HQS 40-95 SS set

After playing only via my audio interface with headphones, I decided that I needed a cab. Purchased an EBS Session 30 mk3, super happy with it!
Cannot see myself needing anything bigger at home; if I crank it, my whole room shakes. It has a super clear and nice tone as well.

And on the plus side, the DI out seems excellent. Now I just keep my bass connected to the EBS all the time and run the DI out to my audio interface, and when I play with headphones, I just turn the volume knob down on the EBS and keep playing; the volume does not affect the DI out. So playing around in Logic Pro with amp sims, etc., is as easy as it was when running bass directly into the interface’s hi-z input.

Well I have an EBS 60 combo, never even thought about going thru its DI out but I’ll give it a spin tomorrow, thanks for the hint!

It was awesome, my brother and I walked 10 miles per day 3 of the 4 days! It was hot and I consumed a lot of water! I saw an Ernie Ball 6 string Bongo for the first time in the wild! The bass player from Chelsea Grin played a purple one! I have the Mantis Green one!

Sweet!!!:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

New strings day, the best my Yam BB734a has sounded, it now has the tone that I’ve been searching for, rich, deep, warm and full. My Yam is sounding beautiful. 1st time I’ve tried DR.
