Gig Story

We had a show this weekend and something interesting happened.
It was a 4 band bill – We were band number 3 (Right before headliner/Closer)

The sound guy was a little slow and the stage monitors did have some issues.

After 2 songs the bass player in band number 2 said - I quit I can’t hear anything.

This struck me as really lame.
In the crowd everything sounded fine to me. It thrash metal and death metal so… well it can be noisey anyway.

(Enter old guy mode) Back when I started playing in the 80’s you just cranked the amps and you got what you got. Now fast forward 35 years I run into a lot of younger guys who are really picky.

My opinion is sure – Would be nice if everything is perfect but you’re lucky as a musician that you get the opportunity to play for people.

Don’t take the audience for granted. Give them a show unless the problem is insurmountable. Hell! band number 1 had the fire alarm going off – it just added to the light show – No Fire.

I guess in closing – There is no music without the critical piece – The audience! You should always appreciate them.

Cool story! ( well not so cool for band 2 )

I come from the early 90’s road band era… so I completely relate to ALL of your insights. They are SPOT ON.

Sure they may be a bar crowd… but like you said… they deserve a show.
And it puts you in better with management of the venue.

On a side note… I’ve had the fire alarm ( free strobes ) thing happen during a gig… LOL… It’s not that uncommon actually. ( I blame the cook in the back… LMAO  )

Gotta love audience participation. We played a bar one night and a fight broke out over the pool tables. We immediately played Toby Keith’s “I Love This Bar” and it went over well!

Situational awareness for the win!

Yeah that guy showed lack of professionalism AND good showmanship. Being like that will come back to bite him eventually, if it hasn’t already. People don’t want to work with someone like that.
