The white (7445) pads are supposed to be equivalent to 0000 steel wool. You should be able to buff it back up to a gloss finish again afterwards if you change your mind.
Something that gets overlooked too is that ScotchBrite isn’t some kind of magic plastic; it’s polyamine fiber with aluminum oxide particles. As the fiber wears, it sheds those little particles just like sandpaper does.

I tend to agree with you, @andrea-slndr. I have basses with lovely satin necks, but I also have a Squier CV 50s bass with a high gloss neck. I don’t have a problem switching between them, even when warm…
The point you make about sweaty fingers getting bogged down on strings … yep, been there!
