Good Bass Day

One of my motivations to pick up the bass after over 20 years was the idea of inspiring my kids and showing them about how music is made. Their mom has a masters in art history so they’ll get a great visual art education from her. Maybe I can make them see music as art? One can dream.

Anyway, today I was playing bass and my 6 year old said “Dad I like it when you play music. It’s nice.”. I’ve peaked. Anything good that happens from now on is gravy.

My kid was part of my motivation too. I feel like with technology and instant gratification these days kids are losing their frustration tolerance and patience with learning new skills, so I figured that seeing me learn something new and the effort and reward behind that process would be helpful (he’s almost 7).

I don’t know if it’s working but he has asked for a guitar.

That’s awesome. Start them young, they pick it up so quickly. My son taught himself how to play guitar after already playing sax and banjo. He now plays 3 variations of sax, acoustic and electric guitar, banjo and recently started teaching himself trumpet. Downside is, gets expensive

Good bass day…and a shameless bit of band promotion!

My band, The Invertants, have our first properly paid gig coming up on the 15th May. I say properly, as while we had a support slot to another band a month ago that was paid, it wasn’t our gig, it was the other band’s.

If there are any ‘Buzzers’ in the south East of England that fancy it, we’re playing the Jimmy White’s Sports Lounge in Woking, Surrey. We start at 8:30 pm and will play 3 x 45min sets.

If you’re local’ish and want to meet in the real world, come on down!

Two more rehearsals to go
