Help me win $300

So I’m an English teacher, and my company is having an annual talent contest where you record a 45 second video of you doing something.

I usually don’t enter, but I have a talent now! I can play bass.

So I’m thinking of what I could record myself playing which would be fun, relatively easy, and related to teaching or the English language.

I was thinking of something from Sesame Street, I love the pinball number count:

But maybe there’s something else. Does anyone have any ideas? The only stipulation is that the part I record can be a maximum of 45 seconds.

Edit: I teach adults, so something less kid themed would be good, but the school does also teach kids, so I could do something in that direction.

I thought of School House Rock… but you only have 45 seconds, I think you might need to get right to the catchy part of whatever song you choose… the verb song is good, but it is a story, albeit only 3 minutes, but it takes a while to get the gist of it. Plus many folks may not be familiar with it. J5 and ABC is so iconic. JMHO.

If you have a lot of self-confidence, you could do this:

ABC also has the line “I’m gonna teach you…”

Yeah I think I might go with that.

Hey @THRILLHO,

I thought you could play a little improvised line yourself. Why not pick a few chords and weave a few parts together?

Here’s my recipe:

  1. Pick a few related chords, e.g. for the key of C: C-major, Em, F, G, Am
  2. Jam with C-maj, F, G
  3. Jam with Em G
  4. Decide which part is the theme, which one is the contrast
  5. Pick a rhythm for each part, start super simple, then build it up
  6. Record!

You can add text to your video to explain what happens. For an educational video, it would be cool to build from simple roots to arpeggios.

Heck, now if I think about it, I might jam something myself!

Have fun!

These above are all great suggestions! I vote for the Jackson 5’s ABC. It’s such a nice song!

This sounds fun! I’d be tempted to do a clip from Another Brick In the Wall lol

Or arrange Figure 8 (My favorite schoolhouse rock song) for bass. It’s a circle that turns round upon itself.
