Help with "Under The Bridge" fingering

Hi,

I am trying to work on Under The Bridge from the “First 50 songs” section.

I got most of it alright, but I am having a hard time with the chorus, specifically moving from the open A to the E note on the G string (9th fret), to the A note on the D string (7th fret).

Mostly, how do you manage muting the open A? I tried moving my anchoring thumb from the E string to the A string, but I can’t do it fast and accurate enough.
Short of working more on my technique to be able to move my anchoring thumb down, any other suggestions for muting this open A?

Thanks!

The only other option is in the fretting hand.
If you fret the E on the G string with your third or fourth finger, you could open up the index and middle fingers of the fretting hand to go loose and cover your strings to quiet them down.
