Is there a polish or wax or coating to help keep a white bass from yellowing? My Steve Harris Fender has started to yellow until I noticed it and locked it away in the dark. I’ve seen a few other white basses with a yellow tint. If I were to get another white bass, I’d like it to stay white! Thanks for any clues!
The boring science answer is that UV (Ultra violet) light breaks down the binders and pigments in the coating.
You see lots of old Les Pauls that look pale yellow that would have originally been bright white.
When UV light strikes paint, it triggers a photochemical reaction. Pigments lose their ability to reflect light at the intended wavelengths, so colors look duller or washed out.
Too much UV is also not great for skin long term ![]()
The answer is to keep it out of direct sunlight.
…and fluorescent lights. And incandescents, and LEDSs…
And some finishes are better than others at maintaining the bright whiteness. However, all will age at some point.
On the other hand.. I’ve seen white paint go yellow while in the dark in 10 years time , happened on the inside of my toilet door where almost no light comes in ( old school non waterbased paint)
Provided I’m the only male in the house and my aim is good it must be the absence of light ![]()
So what I’m getting from this @John_E and @qenden is that every few years one should buy a new white bass?
Or, everything fades. Objects, plants, people, spouses…. embrace the fade, they are all cheaper to keep.
Evenly everywhere?
Play nothing but Carpenters music?

A respray will do …
So, Olympic white isn’t quite the same as Colonial white, is it?
That’s the rite of passage or badge of honor as naturally aged instruments can’t be faked.
They’re similar but Colonial white is more racist.
Just the white, I had it on a stand in my home office for a couple years.
That’s the plan!
It’s a heavy badge, 12 lbs. to be close to exact! ![]()
Funny that you mention that, my wife is a big Carpenters fan, I did play Rainy Days And Mondays for her once. And once we were in a Karaoke and for her turn, she sang that song. I was up after her, so I told the guy to play the same song! I did it in Death Metal!
Arguably, the biggest reason I love about the SH. Solid Maple on Maple.
