bass got me back in to music; music makes me forget I am a corpie wageslave cog
Posted this last Xmas, and will repeat this year.
Playing bass lets me help out with the Xmas party for kids in foster care.

definitely lots of math in music
Love it!
In fact you inspired me to help schools over here as well. Not with playing, obviously, don’t want to give the kids a trauma by listening to me
But I help a school project with gamification of music lessons now. Very satisfying.
Thanx!
Mine does too. The joys of living in a small house
But it is rather convenient being so close.

For the past 27 years, my job has been to help others shine, i.e. I am only successful if my clients are successful. Well, I say that, my current job is to manage a team of professionals, whose job it is to sell our ability to make others shine… our USP, apart from sector expertise, is that we help clients get sh!t done and operationalise strategy.
My job as the bassist in our covers band is, along with the drummer, to lay the foundations, for others (the guitarist and the singer) to shine. I also seem to be the one that drives the whole project along, ‘cos I like to get sh!t done.
Maybe, that’s why I like the bass. While I do appreciate some appreciation, I don’t want to be the glory-boy. I’m happy to provide the foundations that enable to the getting done of sh!t.
Deck the halls with lots of basses, falalalala lalalala!
I was cheating -
Playing bass is my main job, so playing bass really helps my main job.
I can see how that would help…
I am a high school English teacher, and my goal last January was to get back to playing bass and play with people and in front of others.
This past September I told two friends we had to play in front of the kids at lunch. And we did. The kids and the staff loved it. In 31 years of teaching, it was my scariest moment.
The next week I had kids asking if they could do it too. And the Performance Club was born. My classroom has a 3 amps, 3 guitars, and a drum set. I have kids in my room all the time practicing and performing. In 31 years of teaching, it’s my proudest moment.
It’s open to everyone, regardless of talent. If they have the courage and can play the whole song in front of me first, I have the stage. They have performed twice at lunch and it’s amazing the crowd that comes out to listen. Everyone is so supportive.
Kids have been telling me how they have been buying guitars and drums and basses. They are so into it.
By the way, my teacher band, Las Cebollas, (we will make you cry), ends each show.
This is so heartwarming!
Love this! Thank you for 31 years of teaching! Most people seem to have one or two teachers who they say inspired them. I bet you are that teacher for a lot of kids.
Love everything about this.
Playin bass has opened up a new line of communication with my boss at work … (a drummer) He may get a kit next season… and there may be jams!
Dude you literally are the school of rock!
How does bass playing help in my main job? It keeps me from rage-quitting, as I know I’ll need to stay gainfully employed in order to keep fueling my bass habit.
So cool , exactly how I got into making music at 14
Some years ago, I worked in a company where the boss liked to throw a lavish party for customers, to thank them for their continued business. He found out that I was in a band, and asked me if I could form a band with some of the other colleagues to entertain at one of these parties. It turned out that indeed, there was a very good keyboardist and violinist, a superb drummer, and a flautist. I was the only guy in the band, the thorn among the roses as it were, playing bass, guitar and singing. Long story short, we,put on an Arabian Nights themed gig for our first occasion and it went like gang busters. We were then asked to play at the succeeding parties and corporate events, and we have even played on a yacht and on a rooftop, Beatles-style! The customers were always very complimentary, and while I’m not sure if it had a direct impact on my job, it helped to build relationships with the customers, and I freaking loved it more than the actual job itself !
