How many hours, days, months did it take to feel competent?

She also was already an experienced musician. Just not on the bass.

Which you can hear, because her lines aren’t necessarily technical. They’re highly musical and serve the song.

You just brought up a past nightmare for me, piano lessons, I took it for about 1 year when I was 12, absolutely HATED it. Looking back on it I figured out why, I was playing songs that I had no interest in, that was the key. If modern day piano lessons use music that is popular, that would make a huge difference, as well as making it fun. It’s also a big reason why we like learning to play the bass, we are playing music that we want to learn how to play, simple as that.

She’s a beast and I love her playing. I’m working on Psycho Killer, I have it pretty well down but it’s a workout for me, but at least I don’t break out in a sweat while I’m playing it anymore.

I’ve been playing practicing for a little over 2 years now , every day for at least an hour and I don’t dare to say I’m a bassist , I always say I started learning the bass

Just joined a band, got my homework and will have my first practice session in 2 weeks from now, I’m scared sh%tless and feel like a total imposter but my enthusiasm wins from my fear.. so do I feel competent? Nope

Before this I have played drums in several bands , never felt really competent in those 15 years I have done that , but I had fun and i worked out well most of the time

So it doesn’t matter , just go and play and have fun!

I love playing the disco octaves!

They’ve become part of my little warmup/practice routine. A great way to strengthen those pinkies and practise muting.

Yeah I thought that too. Actually, I think I saw people mentioning that on forums when they talked about this course before I signed up.

Was it maybe like that on the older version of the course?

I’m on module 13 right now, so maybe I’ll give BJ a try later.

Good idea for a warm up.

I practice the major and minor scale

Are you the guy in the room wearing the bass? Then you’re the bassist.

You got this.

I suppose I have sort of an answer for this, even though I spent several decades playing a standard 6 string guitar, I was asked how long have I been playing several times (sort of different from this thread’s question) but my answer could apply here as well.

“I don’t play the bass, I play with the bass.” Same answer, different instrument.

Competence depends on which song, some yes, many not at all.

It’s not exactly like that but Josh will speak about BJ in the last module.

You wait until @qenden gets paid for a gig, and then he becomes a ‘professional bassist’ like me :joy:
