We just have an agreement that we can each put a certain amount in to fun discretionary stuff each year for our respective hobbies; how we manage that is up to us. I just track it in a spreadsheet for myself, makes kind of a fun game. Also incentivizes selling for profit where possible. Super reasonable agreement, keeps everyone happy, prevents questions about mysterious packages shaped like guitars showing up at the door
Curious - I assume there is no resale market for plugins, correct?
Which would mean that at least for physical pedals, purchased carefully, could yeild a break even or better scenario, or, worst case maybe 50-60% return back.
…‘per square foot’ - Al whispers when his wife is out of earshot.
I guess a lot depends on what your disposable income is. £1000 is an awful lot of money to some, and not so much to others. I started bass a few months ago and now have two basses, a practice amp, several books and courses including B2B. Maybe about £1800 total.
I have also played guitar badly for several years and have acquired a collection of guitar related gear. Plus I also have a good quality Roland electronic drum kit. There is always something else “I would like” but not necessarily need!!!
For sure.
Plus you can get a perfectly fine instrument for just a few hundred dollars/euros. You don’t need to break the bank to get an instrument that is just fine for recording and gigging.
Plead the 5th. Wife might read this someday
Spoken like a married man.
Who wants to stay that way
There is that.
And also for a complete beginner who has not played an instrument before there can be a surprising amount of “sundries” such as tuner, cables, straps, guitar stands, gig bag/case, new strings etc which all adds to the initial cost.
Spoken like a man that intends to stay married!
… ok, this is… surprising.
Three bass guitars (all secondhand)
A practice amp
A stage amp (secondhand)
Strings
A tuner
Straps
Instrument cables
Stands
Wall-mounting brackets
Gig bags
Zoom B1X Four thingy
B2B course
Total spent for all the above: € 1.035
I would have sworn it would’ve been more. My wife would be surprised too.
@Al1885 l That is a lot of bass. Do you ever find a bass you’d forgotten about?
@mgoldst way less than my wife wants to chuck on a vintage wooden flute…
Are you kidding? I don’t know what I have forgotten, lol. I know I have 4 bodies and 6 necks I ordered for my projects and lords knows how many pickups EMGs alone I can do a display at NAMM, lol. 3 if the basses I know for sure where they are but I’m not going to dig them up.

A year before Covid started I was busy with my drum set I sent a few basses to my house in Thailand, amount them a 5 string Ken Smith Burner, a few pros over there made offers. I want to do that in person. It might worth more to me giving it to them.
What do you know about soapbar pickups?
Thinking of modding that Harley Benton and refinishing it as well as a fun project.
My current front runner for soapbars are the Seymour Duncan Bass Blackouts, but open to suggestions.
There is a whole lot less out there about soapbars vs. P and J
They will go in here.
Also, preamp suggestions?
Well you are in luck, EMG makes a Thunderbird models there are plenty of choices.
My personal favorite would be the TBP on the neck and TBTW on the bridge, then you can have a PJ or a PMM tonal choices.
Unless of course, they are using a standard soapbar size of 35mm then I’d still pick the same model configuration. I find that covers wide range of popular tones.
If it’s a 35 model you’d also have cover colors option.

3.5k or so
mark bass amp and 15in cab, hartke 2x10 transporter cab
Ibanez sr500
sterling sting ray 34hh and 34
couple cases, straps, guitar wall hangers, vox stomp lab 2b.
My wish list includes a sire p7 and a sire v7 then I’ll be done. (at least for a while) Maybe an amp with more power a long way down the road.
@Al1885 I’m showing my wife this pic when I get home, she thinks I have too much “music stuff”. Apparently, I am just scratching the surface.
That was 5 months ago. I gotta update that shot soon. Lol.
You need that same pic but apitioned with what he says the first time when he says some reduculously small bumber (after being frozen for so many years) and they all laugh at him.
Like ten thousand dollars, and That would be a bit more accurate.
