sorry, after writing it I said to myself that it was not very interesting
but I just saw that there is an “undelete” function on the forum

Undelete! Undelete! I want to see what it was.
done. but that’s not interesting
I thought it was a very good post and was sad when you deleted my friend.
thank you
I’m glad you brought it back. It’s interesting to see how different manufacturers do this.
This is particularly interesting. I never would have guessed the Ultra Low would be at 600 Hz. That’s solidly mid range instead of Low.
Yeah but in reality this Ultra low filter makes the sound really dark, I guess it’s a quite different filter than what we’re used to : it’s not a band-pass ! 600 Hz is not really a high frequency for a low-pass filter
It turns out it’s actually a low-Q band-stop at 600Hz with a high low shelf. Red line here:
(that’s actually a V-4B but same effect on the much poorer graphs I have seen from the SVT).
well yeah, that’s dark
big time
I have many questions about this graph though because I really doubt it’s boosting the lows by 15dBu. I mean it might be but it doesn’t sound that pronounced in real life, at least on a SVT. I think this is actually a graph of the relative signal difference from the flat preamp, not the absolute end boost.
Not so sure ! this specific switch is really drastic. Also it really lowers the overall volume. I’ll try recording a quick demo.
would love that as I have heard it on many sims but only on recordings of actual SVTs. I’ve played through real ones but never kicked it on that I remember
Shitty playing without any inspiration, recorded with the phone at very low volume (which means that you hear the acoustic attack on the strings on top of the amp).
The cracking noises come from my old wooden chair, sorry.
But yeah, I hope it gives an idea somewhat. I’ll record a better demo when I’ll have more time.
that thing sounds so awesome on its own
For my clean tone, I’m searching for a “vintage” warm yet balanced tone, with the typical “old P” groove. I add the FX84 if I want a more modern punchy clean tone, and the Microtubes if I want some grit & growl
I’m not sure how to emulate what Josh is doing with the contour switch on his rumble. I’m not using my amp, trying to work things out between my basses preamp (yamaha tbrx604), zoom b1x4, the scarlett solo 4th gen, & reaper.
edit: I guess reaper would be post production? I listen via the scarlett.
On your TRBX, slowly decrease the mids until you smile.
Love love that sound of that SVT!
That was the most informative and easy to understand lesson on how EQ works. Finished your course a while ago, but still learning.
Thank you for all you do for us novice bass players.
Thanks for actually typing this out, @eric.kiser!
On hols at the moment, so can’t really play with my multi-effects - there is a multi-band EQ option on it, that I need to try out.
That said, one of my basses, the Ibanez EHB1000S is as dark as hell. I’d recoded a cover on it (well a few), but it has always sounded muddy and I really wasn’t happy with the results. I’ve just had a play with it - backing off the very low end in GarageBand and boosting up the treble a little - and bingo, it’s sounds far better!
I’d actually been contemplating selling the Ibanez, but maybe I just need to create some patches expressly for it, where I’ve EQed it properly!
Who know? Well, clearly @JoshFossgreen did! Thanks!
