How to learn new songs/bass lines

I thought perhaps we could share some tips&tricks about how to approach a new song, especially a new bass line and learn to play it, and what is important in the process. This was partly inspired by @John_E ’s recent “learn a song in a day” demonstration of determination and will power (maybe he could share how he tackled that challenge here!?), but also of a recent insight for myself concerning what I need to work on much more.
