Yes very nice! Those old SG’s are awesome.
The more recent SGV’s are great too, not too expensive either.

I did a thing
Have an idea for a project I will need a guitar for and I miss my Revstar. I figured I should start real cheap this time as I have a terrible history buying and selling guitars.
This is the bottom tier line of the Yamaha Pacifica. I have owned a very similar one before and they are just fine, quite nice superstrats really. This one popped up for well under $100 at which point lol why not.
When I get to a point where I feel “proficient” (whatever that means) enough at bass to play live with people, I really want to pick up a baritone guitar and get my shoegaze on. That’s probably a next year project though.
Is it just me or do DiMarzio pickups always sound cleaner and more defined than the corresponding Duncans? They both usually have models in the same roles but every head to head I have heard the DiMarzios just sound way better to me.
It’s possible it’s my bias for Ceramic pickups over AlNiCo but still. I mean, check this out:
Two excellent pups but the DiMarzios are just so much more defined, and this seems consistent for most examples I find comparing the brands. The only place the Duncan wins in there is when it’s really dirty, and that’s just because the DP100’s big bass and low mids gets a bit too macho, and the Duncan’s high mids take over a bit.
DiMarzio’s and Duncan’s are a bit different. I own plenty of both pickups from those brands, I like both.
If you ask me between the DM Super Distortion vs the SD SH4, I much prefer the DM. But I prefer a SD SH5 over a DM Super Disto for example. (the SH5 being some kind of ceramic version of the SH4)
try a SD Nazgul for this
Yeah I’ve liked all the Duncans I have owned (mostly SH-1n and TB-14’s). But whenever I am comparing them the AlNiCo Duncans lose out to the Ceramic DiMarzios.
And I think this is the actual answer here. I just prefer big loud ceramic pickups
yeah in most cases I prefer a ceramic bridge pickup too
So I noticed that the Pacifica has a full cavity rout. It’s like a bathtub. Any pickup combo would work, just needs a Pacifica pickguard to fit.
So, I can quite easily mod it to H/H or H/P90 if I want as those both exist as stock Pacificas. And of course do more if I am willing to cut the pickguards myself.
Not doing anything for now, HSS is fine for the moment, but I always go down this hole.
@terb - so generally for the neck, the theory is to go more high mids and treble, to counteract the low end mud? Is that why you see a lot of PAFs there?
Oh. the PAF is not very trebly actually.
But yeah you would want something with less bass and low mids in the neck position, for sure.
In a HH configuration my absolute favorite is the SD Sentient/Nazgul set. You would love that. It’s … perfect. The Sentient is a stellar neck HB. Hands down my favorite of all times.
lol almost 15k ohms on the Nazgul. Ok sold
Might keep an eye out for good used deals.
and it still works very very nice for light crunch stuff !
a SH5 would sound a bit more full but still close. The Nazgul is the modern version of the SH5 in my opinion. Just a little bit more … tight. Both are really excellent bridge pickups.
GO GO GO !
It was even a trembucker, perfect
not sure the Nazgul even exists as a narrow pole HB
I crack myself up. 48h ago I am like “I kind of need a guitar for this thing, I’ll buy a real cheap one.”
I realized I have unused 500k and 250k CTS pots, and also an unused switchcraft jack. The guitar isn’t shielded so I needed to order some paint anyway, and well might as well throw in a .01uF orange drop.
Then I thought about the pickups and well you just saw where that went. And now the pickguard is on the way too. Oh and hey I need some new sandpaper anyway, WTH let’s give this thing a rolled fretboard, why not.
So now, less than two days later, I have essentially a high-quality superstrat parts kit on its way. The original guitar hasn’t even arrived yet and I have already ordered replacements for most of the important bits.
This will be the most kickass Pacifica 012 evar
Remember kids, this is your brain on GAS
I’ve had a cheap Pacifica telecaster, a long time ago. I made a custom pickguard with a different shape, and I bought a set of Rio Grande Vintage Tallboy pickups. The thing sounded awesome with the Mesa amp that I had at the time. I finally sold it because the neck was very narrow.
Anyway even if you decide later to change the guitar, it would be easy to put back the original pickguard and keep the SD Nazgul/Sentient set, so not a big issue
Yep definitely, going to save the original pickguard intact with the old electronics for when I eventually sell it.
Nice little guitars! This is the second Pacifica I have owned, my first guitar was a 112V. Very very similar to this 012.
Just arrived in fact:
Needs a little cleaning but not bad. Nice little blue superstrat.
