+1, sand it and move on
If only I were.
Yes I have those too, but as mentioned if you swap your strap or take it off a lot to put your bass in a gig bag or case it’s not the most convenient.
Look at it this way. Some people pay Fender big bucks to beat the shit out of their bass for them. You just saved a ton of money.
I’ve done a lot of spray paint and airbrush work, and were it my bass, I would still just sand it a bit and live with it. YMMV.
And for the love of all that is holy, don’t clearcoat over the damage, like you sometimes see on bad relic jobs.
Are these easy to install on thicker straps? I have dunlops, and recently bought a strap that is a bit thicker. I was able to get the dunlop on it, but it was not pretty.
As someone with a pretty extensive background in painting, i wouldnt fix it. Its in the perfect place to make it look like some natural wear.
I would though consider repainting it a nice orange colour
And dont use olive oil on it
Yes they are and its why I switched over to them.
They screw down so they don’t care how thick a strap is.
Wish I started with them.
I have mine on a thick Levy’s 4.5 inch padded leather strap. I also have some on thick a Gruv Gear Solo strap. The Schaller S locks have longer stems than some other locks so they can fit on thick straps.
Yeah, Schallers are pretty much the best.
That’s the one.
And that’s my other one.
I already made the Dunlop fit, and I’m a bit concerned about reusing the screw hole for the pin, so I’ll leave it the way it is for now, but good to know that the Schallers are the better option for future reference…
The reason why I went to the Schallers was because the Dunlops didn’t fit my Levi’s strap. Now I prefer them. As you can see from the picture they fit quite thick straps with room to spare.
A shutout to the Levi’s strap that in my opinion are the best for bass.
So, a few things.
First, @connellj65, that sucks. I would cry. I baby my basses, and my heart would break.
Second, if you don’t want to install strap locks, D’Addario (and a few other manufacturers, I think) make straps that have locks built-in for standard strap pegs. Something like this:
I’ve used one of those before, they lock pretty well and they’re easy to unlock.
Third, that guy in @RuknRole ‘s video is gnutz. Personally, I’ve never understood the whole “relic” look, but even if I did throwing around my bass’ body like a frisbee and letting my dog chew on it offends my sensibilities.
I have Schallers and also Ernie Ball strap locks. The EB’s were on sale at Sweetwater. You can get them in different colors (chrome, gold, black…etc) and they are awesome and extremely secure.
+1 for EB’s and Schallers @EddieJones. I bought a used Stingray that came with the nonpadded EB strap. It was so easy to take on and off, that I bought the padded version.
I have the EB’s on my Sterling and Ibanez. They are so secure I doubt they would ever fail. And so easy to get off. A quick squeeze from both sides and it disengages.
I have 4 Levy’s…the 3 inch split strap is on three and the 4.5 big boy is on my Ray34. Great straps. Quality is awesome and mine are breaking in nicely.
I looked on Amazon to see what strap locks I have…Wolfrides. They work really well and I’ve bought 4 boxes (4 locks per box). They’re an inexpensive option.
