If you only play bass you are not a musician

For some reason it’s trendy to bash on bass players, like the “you guys are getting paid” memes and such. I imagine in his circles it might be a thing too and might not have too much malice behind it. That said, i didn’t listen to the clip and I have no idea who this guy is and that comment will not win me over in the least.

wow… a white guy on a podcast with an ignorant, moronic opinion. never seen that before.

What an asinine take!

Also, welcome @nightpain to the forum! What a way to kick things off :joy:

Edit to add: this band is from my hometown :weary:

Adds “All that Remains” to The List

Most especially in an orchestra: Several sections of instruments support rhythm and harmony.

His mate… Matt Deis plays bass for Babymetal.
And Barone also… and Jason left the band 2/3 days ago.

So yeah… he’s having an identity crisis.

Or as a mate pointed out in Babymetal’s discord:

What if the only instrument you play is your voice ?

I dunno, i kind of just think everyone can have their own opinion - it doesn’t make it fact, and doesn’t really bother me.

It’s mildly insulting. Standard pre-schooler mindset.

I’ll keep learning musical concepts that his mind won’t probably grasp.

I’m pretty sure he knows what’s up but the last few 4 string bassists had their way with his old lady and this is just a revenge tour. It’s sad but it happens.

Thanks for the welcome. Been following Josh on YT for the longest time. But you know, when they sent me the clip, I felt I got sucker punched. . So, I thought I’d make a topic here where the big boy bassists are. I’m old now, fingers don’t work like they used to. Have to sit while playing due to a bad back. I can only play simple stuff. Like Josh says I’m a bedroom bassist now. Anyway I vented a bit, sorry.
Just want to wish everybody all the best in achieving their goals be it as musicians or anything else.
Cheers.

The absolute best thing you can do if you frequent the internet is to remember that the last great revolution in computing was to make the computer interface simple enough for absolute idiots to use.

Before that, it was a bit of a barrier to idiots.

Train yourself to recognise and not react to stupid opinions. It’s not like you would respect the people who have them, so why would you care what they’re saying?

i mean, guitar players, am i right?

Here is an honest but critical take:

If you only understand the role of a single instrument in an ensemble, you are not a musician. To be a musician, you need to understand how different instruments contribute different elements to the greater composition and how to play those off of each other in a way that makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

I’ve learned a number of instruments (and forgotten most) over the course of my life: violin, clarinet, saxaphone, recorders/whistles, piano, voice, and bass guitar.

Bass is one of the simpler instruments I’ve learned, but NOT the simplest.

But Simple does not mean Easy.

Voice is both one of the simplest instruments, and one of the most difficult to master.

I would say that Bass is an instrument with a relatively low bar to be good enough to fill that role in an ensemble, but one of the most difficult to master.

This I agree with. I have a similar take with people within my industry… but lack the bare minimum knowledge to understand the roles and the effect in the overall team / work.

Amen.

I bet he also says that real bass players don’t use picks.

Stuff like this is what keeps the internet alive.
Bless the guy.
Bless guitarist jokes, bless the dumb drummer stereotype, all hail the keyboard-cat-hoarder-theory-nerd archetype, all of it.

When I worked at a music shop the sales folk would swap music jokes. Lots about accordions and banjos.
I’m into all of them.

But, they absolutely sting if they somehow break through into your reality. So, I get it, but - like everyone is saying - internet gunna internet.
I really like how this is the spot to bring the bass-bash-garbage for a reality check and a morale boost.
I like this forum a lot.

I used to play accordion. In fact, this one day, I was coming home from a lesson (yes, there are actual accordion teachers, LOL) and stopped by the mall to pick up some stuff. Half-way through I realized that I’d left my car doors unlocked and my accordion was in the car!

I ran out there all worried but by the time I got there it was too late… someone had put another accordion in there.

(Also works with bagpipes.)
