Those guys were kind of a two-fer, yeah. There was also the mass murder dude. It’s like Norway channeled all its pent up Viking essence into one music scene.
Really? I’m a lot into metal, not so much into black metal but as a serious metal head, I surely know that stuff even though it doesn’t attract me too much. I’ve never noticed that many of them don’t have a bass player. Need to have a look at since I find that quite interesting indeed.
There’s also blackgaze and more progmetal bands I know of without one. Oathbreaker didn’t always use one (but usually do), and of course Animals as Leaders (who never do AFAIK).
I’m not in to blackmetal itself so don’t have too many examples at hand, but I do know this is a thing.
They’ve never had a live bass player. There are bass tracks on songs, Tosin plays them for studio recording and the laptop plays them live. They’re also both playing 8 string guitars so they’re down pretty far into bass territory.
Lots of extreme metal with 6 string bass players. When the extended range guitars are down in traditional bass range they go find space to play above them.
ETA: Animals as Leaders, Plini, Intervals, and Arch Echo are all fantastic instrumental prog metal groups!
Don’t be triggered by this nonsense. This is a classic case of “Sour Grapes” so don’t take the bait. People who write this garbage usually aren’t doing anything and don’t even have anything to do it with. Now, get back to work and consider yourself counselled. Those turnips will always be out there so don’t waste your valuable time with them.
Although a lot of the xtian bm bands refer to themselves as “white metal”. I think instead of burning churches, those guys go around building churches in the night.
(and yeah I have also seen “unblack metal” as a genre.)
That’s a fine question but given that blackmetal themes are often and probably usually on the occult, harm, paganism, anti-Christianity, satanism, and in general throwing a party for the other team, I gotta go with - yeah Christian Blackmetal is weirder.
