If you only play bass you are not a musician

If there is even a single arpeggio, add “melodic”…

The literal Nazis and the arsons of architecturally and historically significant churches are also problems for me yeah.

Just another of the ever growing vitriolic social media posts to ignore.

Those guys were kind of a two-fer, yeah. There was also the mass murder dude. It’s like Norway channeled all its pent up Viking essence into one music scene.

Thank you, @Billn. I read, I noted, I googled the genres, I listened…clearly extreme metal just isn’t for me!

That’s a bummer. Fortunately you have many other positive qualities to make up for your incorrect opinion here

Shame, i saw them live last October and actually enjoyed them.

Does the vibraslap count as a second instrument?

Not sure about this - we’ll have to turn to our celebrity judge, John McCrea from the band Cake…

And he says YES! It does, indeed, count as a primary, only, or secondary instrument, and he also wants you to record on his record.

Really? I’m a lot into metal, not so much into black metal but as a serious metal head, I surely know that stuff even though it doesn’t attract me too much. I’ve never noticed that many of them don’t have a bass player. Need to have a look at since I find that quite interesting indeed.

I think the real reason is the guitars are often downtuned but lots of theories about why this is.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BlackMetal/comments/48sd3q/why_is_bass_not_used_much_in_black_metal/

There’s also blackgaze and more progmetal bands I know of without one. Oathbreaker didn’t always use one (but usually do), and of course Animals as Leaders (who never do AFAIK).

I’m not in to blackmetal itself so don’t have too many examples at hand, but I do know this is a thing.

I was jumping to the link you provided and all of a sudden I came across stuff like that :joy:

They’ve never had a live bass player. There are bass tracks on songs, Tosin plays them for studio recording and the laptop plays them live. They’re also both playing 8 string guitars so they’re down pretty far into bass territory.

Lots of extreme metal with 6 string bass players. When the extended range guitars are down in traditional bass range they go find space to play above them.

ETA: Animals as Leaders, Plini, Intervals, and Arch Echo are all fantastic instrumental prog metal groups!

Ahh yes, inevitable really. Blackmetal Redditors

Also TIL the fact that Christian Blackmetal is an actual real genre and I was like

Yes, same here. “Christian Black Metal”. Hm. Isn’t that a contradiction in itself?

There was another post where one guy told “Black Metal made me bald”. But he seems to be happy without hair now. :joy:

Then I accidentally came across a discussion like “Should only black trans-women wear wigs or is it also okay when you’re white?”

I stopped reading further.

Don’t be triggered by this nonsense. This is a classic case of “Sour Grapes” so don’t take the bait. People who write this garbage usually aren’t doing anything and don’t even have anything to do it with. Now, get back to work and consider yourself counselled. Those turnips will always be out there so don’t waste your valuable time with them.

Also Christian death metal.

Although a lot of the xtian bm bands refer to themselves as “white metal”. I think instead of burning churches, those guys go around building churches in the night.

I mean it might be alright but can it beat 80s Christian hair metal?

I would 100% join a band like that :sunglasses:

(and yeah I have also seen “unblack metal” as a genre.)

That’s a fine question but given that blackmetal themes are often and probably usually on the occult, harm, paganism, anti-Christianity, satanism, and in general throwing a party for the other team, I gotta go with - yeah Christian Blackmetal is weirder.
