Technically you don’t “have” to. You can play any style with a pick, even Motown.
But as a die hard pick fan, I recommend getting a grounded skill level in fingerstyle no matter what. Even though I only use it like 10% of the time, it feels good and gives a cool connection with the instrument. And it’s a fundamental skill we should all cultivate.
But if speed is still an issue, no shame in picking.

I’ve been playing this one slowed down to 90 but couldn’t get the feel and the ghost notes right. I’ve been “Air-bass” this a few times and it seems to have much better effect. It’s tough to balance the ghost notes and Double stops though.
I’ll just keep trying and sleep on it 
moral of the story, sometimes you just have to go for it full boat.

I also practice at 110% - when live we have a tendency to play a bit faster and I know I’ll be able to keep up then!
I started with a pick and only recently focused on my finger plucking. You can get super fast with a pick if you practice and you can do a lot more than just root pounding and tremolo picking. Nothing wrong with learning the pick as another tool in the box

I’m a one percent-ner but when I pick I summon my Inner Bobby Vega. Feels great but fails miserably

Youtube shoved this at me today. It’s an exercise for building up speed based on the intro to Dean Town. It’s sixteenth notes. It starts at 50 BPM and goes through the pattern twice (total of 16 bars), then jumps up to 55 BPM for 16 bars, then 60 BPM, etc. all the way up to 90 BPM.

I was literally going to start to drill plucking today using Deantown and I was going to make my own backing track. Thanks for saving me the work!
