Technically you don’t “have” to. You can play any style with a pick, even Motown.
But as a die hard pick fan, I recommend getting a grounded skill level in fingerstyle no matter what. Even though I only use it like 10% of the time, it feels good and gives a cool connection with the instrument. And it’s a fundamental skill we should all cultivate.
But if speed is still an issue, no shame in picking.
