Thanks for the tip, that was just the thing that was bugging the pickup - and what an easy fix it turned out to be! I just unscrewed the thing, raised the whole pickup and whaddaya know, the foam underneath had moved and was not properly in its place. So now it’s directly under the pickup and problem solved.
I still can’t quite believe how much setup and repair work I’ve been able to do by myself. It really is not that difficult once you know what you’re supposed to do. There is still one minor issue that I’m dealing with - now that I’ve lowered the action somewhat, I’ve started to get this rattling sound from the E and A strings. It is not quite a fret buzz, but more like the string rattles especially when fretting from 12th and up. And especially if I pluck harder. Soft, easy touches don’t seem to make the sound. Maybe I just have to lift the action a bit to see if that helps. Oh, and I already ordered feeler gauges to really get specific and accurate on the setup. That way I can set it to Fender recommended specs and if the rattling or buzzing is still there, then maybe I just have to pay a visit to a local guitar tech and have something done to the frets. Maybe they are a touch high or something?
@JyriP have you got a fret rocker? If not look on YouTube you will have something around that you can use. There could be a few reasons but best to do a fret rocker test first.

There’s some extremely knowledgeable and experienced people on here who as a bonus are also very friendly and patient with newbies like myself ( thank goodness)
I’m sure if you ask a question they will help.
And the B2B course is great as a learning aid. From beginner to badass is no idle brag.
Hey y’all! Greetings from Italy!
I’ve picked up bass again after a 4-5 year hiatus as a quarantine project almost two months ago. I already feel like I’m doing much better than back then, as there is a major difference now: I’m motivated.
Wish me discipline, and some good luck too!
Cheers to everyone
Hello everyone, My name’s Emma and I picked up the bass about 1 month ago. After a bad experience with a teacher I decided to try out this course to keep my motivation up.
My favorite bassist is probably Kiyoshi and I’m working my way up in skill to one day fulfill my current dream project which is to make an original music album based on the amazing sounds and songs from the Splatoon game series.
