Newbie to the forum here. I’m old and retired, just turned 70. I play a little 6-strings and moved to bass about 2 years ago. Now playing in our church praise band, but mostly roots and fifths. Have enjoyed Josh on YouTube and decided to join the forum. Wanting to join in on the 50 song challenge but can’t yet find the song sheets. Thanks for allowing me into this great gathering of the low-end.

I had the same thing with the trumpet. French horn was worse.

Anyway, yes, play it slow. Once you’ve got it down, speed up. Youtube’s speed adjustments have been really helpful. I’m a bass god at 25% speed!

I recently found an app called “Loop2Learn” which allows you to loop a portion of a YouTube video. Combine it with the speed adjustment…learning magic.

I’m going to have to try that

Hi all!

New to this program, but not really new to playing bass… I bought my first bass at age 14, and played a bit with friends just for fun. About a dozen years ago I “loaned” that bass to a friend for what was supposed to be a few weeks and they never returned it… and then they moved several states away :grimacing: So about a month ago I finally broke down and bought a new bass, at age 41, because I really just miss playing. (It’s an Ibanez Mikro. Don’t make fun, I have absolutely the tiniest hands and the low frets on a standard bass are SO HARD. I freaking love this thing.)

Anyway, I am, let’s say a “serial instrument collector”? I played clarinet through middle and high school, played some bass through high school, college, and grad school, and have dabbled since then with some guitar, piano, violin, ukulele… I’m not great at any of these at the moment, but I enjoy playing so… I’m here because I like the YouTube videos, and I figured it’d be fun to maybe actually work on technique on at least ONE of the MANY instruments I own so I can play better (faster, and with more accuracy) than I do now :woman_shrugging:

Emma @Emma_S, Welcome

Nothing wrong with a Mikro, or short scale basses at all. Many prefer them for whatever reason.
Comfortable play, less finger stretching
Easier on the shoulder or arm, not having to reach your arm out as far
Light weight
Great boom sound
Lower tension strings (attributing to sound and ease of play)
And many many many more reasons.
We have a thread called “Short Love” IIRC, and if you search it, there is a whole Porn Channel dedicated to Shorties.
