There’s this weekly gathering called The Experiment it shows under “all genres”
It starts 21:00 CET every Friday and lasts way past midnight. No rules other than “no cover”

This is an old thread, but I decided to resurrect it because I have questions about jamming online.
I have a friend who started to learn to play electric guitar about the same time as I did with the bass (this spring), and we only found out now I’m learning bass and she’s learning guitar. So she said we should try jamming together online.
This might be fun, although I think at the moment neither of us have the necessary equipment or knowledge on how to do that. I didn’t buy a DAI yet (I’ll wait for the black friday offers, and also at the moment I wouldn’t have the time to learn how to use a DAW, but later this year it will be better).
At the moment I only have the Katana Go headphone amp, which in principle can be connected to the computer through an USB cable (which believe me or not, I still haven’t tried
).
I wonder if it is possible to jam using only that, and through a Zoom call? I have no idea whether it is possible to use the PC microphone (or the headphones) to speak, and play at the same time.
Also, how can a beginner bass player and a beginner guitar player jam together? The thought scares me a little, because I’m afraid I would get nervous and wouldn’t know what to do. (I know the answer, look at the root notes, go from there. Without a drummer, it would be on me to keep the rhythm. )
Some things can cause me a lot of anxiety, because I’m so afraid of making mistakes, and I know it is ridiculous, but I can get very nervous and unsure of myself. I would like to try this, however, at some point.
Hey Andrea!
Oh god this brings back so many memories!
In the covid times playing together online was the only thing you could do and I experimented on every bit of technology existed at the time…
I don’t have the katana go but as you said you could infact connect it to the pc as a sound input.
However playing online with someone else needs more setup than that. The biggest problem is (with zoom at least) is the time delay in audio transfer. You can play your bass and your friend can hear it but you cannot effectively play together on zoom. Because you’d be using zoom servers to communicate.
Jamulus instead is like a dedicated music server even better with a bit of IT magic one of you can bring up a server and other can connect directly to it minimizing the delay. It’s strongly suggested to use cabled internet connection on the both PCs and no wireless devices.
As an interface katana go has only one input which is your bass. Ideally you would want something like a little mixer which you can connect your bass, a microphone (so the other side can hear your voice) and a drum machine or even a simple metronome…
I don’t have much time now to go more into details but please don’t hesitate to ask!
Hi Fahri and thanks for writing back! I was kind of hoping that in the last years a more simple solution would have come along, and I also forgot to consider the latency issue, which should be quite obvious.
I watched the video about Jamulus and it is very good and informative. It seems a little complicated, and demands a lot of work.
It was silly wishful thinking from my part to hope I could manage online jamming without an audio interface and using the computer’s microphone
Now I see I would first need a DAI, learn to use it, learn to use a DAW software and all the basic stuff, before I even consider online jamming, setting up a server and all that. And I will most likely only buy a DAI a month from now. But, at least now I know it would be a good idea to buy an audio interface in which I could plug a microphone besides the bass, because before this, I thought I would never need a microphone.
I will get back to this idea of online jamming later 1 or 2 months from now, when I have more time and equipment.
Thanks for your answer, it was very helpful! ![]()
If you have a computer with a “wired” internet connection or if your internet box AND your computer have Ethernet ports, you have all you need, except for a basic DAI that has an ASIO driver and an Instrument input for your bass. There are some acceptable choices under 100 €. There’s a great app and online jamming platform called Jamkazam. Check them out. Basic use if free.
Thanks! This seems simple and easy to use. When I buy a DAI I will try this!
I must have (hopefully) an Internet cable somewhere in some closet. We use mostly WiFi nowadays so I hope my husband didn’t throw the unused cable away
But they are cheap, if I need to buy a new one.
I will probably need to buy a microphone as well? If the bass were connected to a DAI then probably I couldn’t use the inbuilt microphone of my PC, right? I would need a microphone connected to the DAI instead.
Nope. I use the mic in my Logitach Brio MX webcam (my laptop is closed and standing on its side behind my monitor. You just need to make sure that: 1) the DAI has a 1/4” (6,3 mm) Instrument input and not just a Line input.
It may seem obvious, but your friend will also need the same setup. Both of you can be on Windows or Mac, or one on each. No problem either way.
Jamkazam for bass and electric guitar
Support/FAQ home page (tons of info)
And here’s the app download link (not easy to find
).
Thanks! I’m planing to buy a Presonus Quantum ES 2 USB-C. I’ll wait to see what kind of black friday offers the local stores will have.
I think once I have it and get it working, I could get familiar with Jamkazam. I don’t think my friend has a DAI yet, but she will eventually want one anyway.
Excellent choice. And you get a perpetual license for Studio One Pro with it. That’s a bargain!
