It’s very kind of his sound engineer to let him think that
(Before anyone jumps on this, yes I know how we can shape our tone with our technique, and of course yes I do this myself, but I always find it very funny when established stars with a set of professionals producing their recordings and live shows say things like this.)
So in terms of a no-knob bass - for recording this would actually be fine. I kinda like the idea TBH as it would work well with my workflow (where I do all EQ and effects in the DAW).
For live, well it’s been a long time since I played live, but not having a volume knob means I would want to have a mute switch pedal.
And again, this would work fine for him because either way he’s playing in to a mixer driven by a dude whose day job is making sure it all sounds good in the mix.
I own all Darts models Both Sterling and MusicMan including the Sterling Dart prototype I made a few years before the real one copied my idea,
I move my plugging hand around when I play the Darts but not as much as other basses. That’s probably why I usually play with all knobs at center detent. It encourages me to generate more articulations.
There’s real beauty in minimalism for sure. I love my nice complex instruments as much as anyone but a big part of me really appreciates elegant simplicity too.
To be fair there are typically at least 2 points of adjustments after your bass before your amp, maybe one directly to the front of the house.
The obvious one is the amp, another is your pedal setting. all if not most would offer Volume and tonal effects on your bass. Your bass (setting) is usually in a fix position anyways.
Most of you know, I’ve been playing all my basses in dead neutral position for the last few years, this is to ensure that all my basses sounds different. Making any kind of adjustments will make my basses sound the same.
I already have the Dart and Dart II, I know that the body is the same shape as the EBMM Sterling and the Sterling SB4 and SB14, it’s not a big huge job to DIY one for myself so I did. Even made the WaterSlide decal and everything.
