Just when I thought I was out

** Long post warning **

You haven’t seen much of me around the forum lately, and I can explain why. First, it was the Covid which hit me in January and knocked me off my feet for three weeks. But that’s not the whole story. The real story is, I had lost my zest for playing bass. For the past few weeks, I’ve been devoting most of my time and energy to developing my skills on the piano. I practice bass for about 15 minutes, and then play piano for hours. It’s not that I suddenly dislike the bass, I just felt that I’ve developed as far as I wanted to, and I had reached the end of my journey. After all, back in June 2019 I had set my sights on learning to play bass, and I seem to have accomplished that. I’m not the great bass player that my title implies (Thanks @JoshFossgreen for giving it to me), but I know I can pick up my bass and play whatever I want whenever I want. So, I embarked on a new journey and a new challenge, becoming more proficient on the piano. I was getting ready to sell two of my basses and pare down to just one, when this happened…

Rewind to October 2021 when I received a message from a man (through Bandmix) stating that he’s going to be starting a new band here in the Phoenix area and asking if I’d be interested in joining as the bass player. I didn’t take him seriously but sent him a reply asking him to keep me informed. I provided him with the link to my website with instructions to watch and listen to my covers so he can get a better idea of my bass playing. A couple weeks later, I heard from him again. He said he had listened to my covers and is definitely interested in me, (which gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling) but I still wasn’t taking him seriously.
In December, he told me he was shooting for April to start the band and asked if I was still available. I told him that I was, but inwardly still didn’t take him seriously. Another message followed asking if I could sing. I told him I sound like crap due to my vocal cords being destroyed from the radiation for my throat cancer. I figured that would be the end of it, but it wasn’t. In January while I was down with Covid, he sent me a potential set list and asked what I thought of it. The list contained many songs that I like, and some that I had practiced. There was even one of which I had recorded a cover (Crazy Little Thing Called Love). I messaged back saying that it was a nice list. I was sick with Covid and had no desire to continue playing the bass, let alone join a band. I hoped to never hear from him again.
Then yesterday I got this from him:

Hi Pam

Looking to finally get us all together.

What type of amp do you use?

I only have two requests;

  1. No discussion of politics at practices…
  2. No one show up ill, cold,flu, etc…

My place;

I messaged back that I would be there.
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in

Once you start down the bass path, forever will it dominate your destiny

Sounds like a good gig. Hope you can try it. Why is it one or the other?

It’s not one or the other, I will always be a bass player I guess. I also want to be a piano player and that’s where my emphasis has been of late.

Pam, that’s awesome!

And don’t worry about bass interest waning a bit; you’ve just discovered another instrument you are enjoying pursuing. Embrace that! Being a multi-instrumentalist is great.

I think you know that for me, bass was never my sole or primary interest. I’m much more interested in overall music production, and bass is one important part of that path. I think the path you are on is totally natural.

Fantastic - you’ll kill it Pam. Having a few tools in your belt will be great for the band, bass and maybe keys if your keys player is away or you just want to have a dabble. I played my first gig a couple weeks ago and it has really renewed my motivation. I hope it all works out for you. Now to the real question … which two basses were on the chopping block?

That’s great news @PamPurrs . You’ll be “Elton John-ing” it in no time no doubt.
It’s also really good to see you back on here. I was a little concerned there for a while

The Hofner Beatle Bass, and the Frank Bello ESP. I had planned to keep the Hofner Club (my favorite).

@PamPurrs congrats! I think you realized, much like I did, that I will always love playing the bass, but my passion is music production or really just being a musician. No need to let an instrument define who you are, plus being a multi-instrumentalist just makes you better overall :slight_smile:

Good for you, Pam @PamPurrs ! :wink:

If he’s that serious, and has been following you all this time, I’d bet this is definitely “Your Ticket to Ride” (pun intended).

If you wanna be in a band, here ya go!

Glad to see you again and wish you the very best of luck in all your endeavors

Thanks. That really wasn’t my goal, and I’m still not sure I’m going to like being in a band, but at least I can give it a try. You never know.
