Katana 110 or rumble 100?

Reading this and the Orange threads is really cementing my desire for the Fender 100.
Eventually, eventually.

6 KILLER Bass Effects [Boss Katana Bass Amp]

I just wanted to share my experience playing in a band practice setting with my Katana 210 for the first time.

It was plenty loud! We had bass, guitar, drums, and keys. We were playing loud enough that I wanted to wear ear protection. I’d say it was a medium volume for a rock band. If we’d been playing in a bar or small venue, it would’ve been loud enough, maybe even a little too loud depending on the size.

I had the amp at maybe 1/3 volume. Definitely less than half. Wasn’t using a lot of a gain or overdrive or anything. Wasn’t using any pedals, just the amp. It was plenty loud enough with loads of headroom.

Obviously I need more eperience in different venues, but as far as loudness and keeping up with a drummer, I think the 210 will be plenty loud unless I were to play an outside gig or a large venue like an arena or something. Might not be able to hang with a crazy loud metal band, I don’t know. But for community gigs, I think it’ll be plenty as long as it’s not outside.

No experience with Katana, I have a Rumble 40 and a 100. Started with the 40 and ended up with the 100 in some trading. All things being equal, I was shocked at the difference the speaker diameter made. The 10" is not bad, but the 12" sounds like actual bass.

Just for that alone I’d go with the Rumble. It’s possible that Katana did some magic with their smaller speaker and you can’t tell the difference, but I think physics overrides all when it comes to actual size.

The price difference is small. If the spartan Fender EQ doesn’t suit you then you might be better off with the Katana. But I feel like if they’re not both 12" amps then that makes the Katana more of a competitor to the Rumble 40, no? From that perspective the Rumble 100 pricing makes it much more appealing.

I have a Katana 50 (for wife) and a 210 for me pending some resolutions here.

210 considered because me and wife planning on pairing with a Drummer… trying to find a date that suits… and he has an acoustic kit… so we need to be amped a bit so we can be heard.

Lets see what future brings!

The 100 is right there!

@Shinyribs that has everything to do with it being a budget practice amp and not just the size of the speakers.

10" speakers have been used for bass in speaker cabinets around the world for decades. The quality of a 10" speakers can vary considerably.

For instance, Paul Jones Bass uses 3", 4", 5", and 7" speakers, and they sound pretty amazing, but the quality of those speakers is incredibly high. (They use ferro fluid to cool the 3" drivers)

Not giving you a hard time, I’m just pointing out that it’s not as simple as just speaker size.

True… but then I need to increase mine also!

It’s been a while since I was researching guitar amps, but I remember the feature difference being meaningful on the guitar models and the bass ones didn’t seem to matter.

LoL! This sounds like something a guitarist would say.

I don’t think there are many here. I own more Fenders than a few people here and I’m not a Fender fanboi, in fact I’ve been bagging them for holding on to the same old almost a century old models. Most of their new models are/ were just terrible.

Fender has more artist endorsements than every companies combined, yet their executions especially in the education department yet they have the ā€œworstā€ program. It’s how fender rolls.

is this the right thread to also ask about another couple of makes? ive always like the look of orange, but they dont seem to get a mention. are they any good?
and also barefaced…now i know they ARE good, but they have a price to match, so whatever i go for next is going to have to be second hand.
i dont even need one, i just have a rumble 15 and practice in my living room, but you know, GAS and all that

Just Buy the Fender Bassman 59 LTD better than those two. Plus Zoom B6 effects… very clean , no hiss and solid tone.

The video back the thread some is the side by side comparison between the 110 Katana and the Fender 100.
A comparison video is worth 10,000 words.
Watch the video and most if not all questions are answered. :jbass: :sunglasses:

When you’re on top, I guess you don’t have to try as hard. Or at all.

Orange gets a lot of love. They make good stuff.

I’ve read about Barefaced. They’re supposed to be great, but I’ve never seen one.

Mostly, they aren’t as big as Fender/Ampeg/Boss. Not as much opportunity for people to try them in stores.

Also, for a community that mostly caters to new bass players, I think we tend to be more price conscious. More bang for your buck and all that.

There is plenty of great gear out there. Genzler, Aguilar, Mesa, Darkglass, just to name a few. But they all come with a heavier price tag. Most new people don’t know enough about the differences, or even what sound they want, to make it worth spending that much.

I hope this helped.

If there’s an amp that gets more bang for it’s buck than the Katana 110 let me know.
I’ve had a 110 for a couple months and have finally started playing with the settings a bit, it’s pretty good…
I’ve been very happy with it while not using the settings and running it basically flat, a few knob turnings and the options come out.
This vid back a bit in this thread made it easy.

Oops. X.X

News Maybe soon? :expressionless:
