Yeah it’s a combo though. I don’t really want any more combos.
What’s you budget @GingerBug ?
I practice with a Rumble 2x10 (Rumble 800) but I gig with my Mark Bass setup.
Mark Bass Little Mark IV head - $650
Markbass MB58R 121 ENERGY 1x12 400W Bass Speaker Cabinet 8 Ohm - $650 x2
Weight is only 25lbs per cab. Total price is $1950.
I like the sound of two 12" speakers and it’s loud. I can’t turn them up anywhere near to 11. We’re already playing at about 110dB which is pretty loud in a bar.
Lots of options (cheaper and more expensive) out there in the head / cab world.
Awesome man! Thanks for the recommendation. One of these days I’m going to go to GC and play on a bunch of amps. Markbass is one of the many brands I’ve never played on before. I’ll definitely check them out!
They’re expensive but I’m very happy with how loud I can get them and they still sound super clean.
I don’t get that with my Rumble 800.
Oh I didn’t answer the budget question. It’s kind of malleable. I have a “bass fund” for all bass related stuff, and I have a good amount of gear I want to sell, so it partly depends on what I can sell things for and how long that takes.
It may be a fun experiment to turn the bottom cabinet upside down so the 12s are right next to each other. It may produce a different tone. The bottom tweeter could probably be shut off.
I don’t know if my OCD could cope with the logo being inverted
Welcome to every day of my life with architects. Sounds good, looks bad.
You could put electrical tape over the logo. That would look better, right?
I also went with the Markbass MB58R for my cab. I think also the energy, but the trim levels are confusing.
I opted for a 4ohm 4x10. I have an 8ohm 1x15 for home practice. I could have gotten another 8ohm cabinet and had the option of pairing both cabs, but I decided I only ever wanted to deal with carrying one cab at a time, so I’ll pick between the two based on needs.
I’m very happy with the cab. Sounds great.
I’m working on a new build ($5 million+) in town. I had a 45 minute conversation with the architect and designer yesterday about whether the gap under the pocket door I’m installing should be 1/2" or 5/8" to finished floor. I feel your pain.
Throw another one of your band stickers over it. You gotta make sure people know that Should We Panic? is playing.
Keep in mind it takes double the power to get 3dB more sound level, which is a nudge up in perception. 250 over 160 is a 1.9 dB increase.
This is why the next step above the 300-500 range becomes feeding the house PA.
Yeah, that makes sense. My thought is that with 500 watts at 4 ohms, I can add another 8 ohm cab in the future if I need more volume to get the full 500 watts.
I’m also now looking at the Aguilar Tone hammer 500 and Mesa Boogie ultra-lite.
I’d guess there’s more loudness from increased speaker sensitivity than increased watts. None of the combo amps appear to publish sensitivity so I’m guessing it’s not great. Gotta keep costs low somewhere.
ETA: sensitivity discussing blog for the education of people who are not DaveT and don’t do this daily:
I recently upgraded to a Genzler Magellan 350 and a 12” Cab from Barefaced. Genzler has a “combo” (not really a combo) that pairs the Magellan 350 with their BA 10 Bass Array. Magellan 350 Combo - SERIES 2 - Genzler Amplification
Very affordable and according to @Al1885 this thing is loud as hell and can take up to 3 cabs (supporting 2.67ohms).
I’d already pulled the trigger on the Barefaced cab, otherwise I’d have gotten either the 10” combo or gotten the Genzler BA 12.
The Genzler rig gets a ton of love so it’s something to consider.
My new rig has exceptional sound clarity with an absolute ton of head room.
Thanks for the article on speaker sensitivity! That’s all new to me.
I know people say for bass another big factor is speaker surface area, and you can get that either through a bigger speaker (12" vs 15") or more speakers (4x10 vs 2x10). But I don’t know the specifics on that, like what amount of speaker area you need for a given size venue or whatever.
It’s also interesting, based on that article, that 3dB is the smallest increment in loudness an average listener can hear. So you double the watts, and you get 3dB more volume, which is just enough to notice the difference, so not much.
Awesome! I’ll check this out too. It’s quite a drive for me to get somewhere that has any kind of decent selection to try out, so the more ideas I have the better.
I ended up purchasing the amp head directly from Genzler and got a personal phone call, from Jeff Genzler himself so they have exceptional customer service.
160 watts of AB class is louder than class D.
The 3 main volume killers are outdoor, untreated room and the audience. Nothing gives you a satisfying mid bass slam like a full house, best acoustic treatment for bass,
