Loopers, drums and lots of GAS

So this Donnor loop/drum pedal usually sells for close to $100. With the Amazon deals on the 8th and $50 in credit card rewards I decided it was worth dropping what amounted to $30 in cash on the pedal.

I arrived today and while you can’t seem to turn it off without pulling the power (which makes it no longer bypass) it’s actually a pretty cool piece of kit for practicing improvisation.

Metronomes are a tad boring and having different drum loops to fool around with in different styles lets you set up a vibe you can jam with. I also liked recording loops of me playing up an octave or so and then just trying to play things that sound good over top.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience in case others were looking at this one. It’s cheap, not perfect but I think I’m going to really like playing with it. You can also dump your loops via USB into your computer which I’m not sure I’ll do since I could just record them in Reaper but maybe I’ll give it a try putting loops INTO the device

I use Hydrogen which is a free and Open Source drum machine. Pretty happy with it for bedroom practice.

I mean, there’s always the option to buy some $10 pack of drum loop samples.

Yea I was just hoping to have some something I can just plunk down and play. I’ve been practicing out on my porch so being able to noodle away from a PC is always nice.

Many DAWs will come with something, some with all you need. Logic, Ableton, and Bitwig all have many options (probably in reverse order of utility - Bitwig really shines here, Ableton is almost as good, and Logic comes in kind of third with its drummers.) Also FL and others come with plenty.

Then you just program the patterns you want with MIDI or simply use the canned loops.

Reaper has a sampler but you’ll need to buy or download free drum samples. Or even better, a good drum plugin like SSD 5.

Or yeah, you could just buy the loops like @wellbi suggested.

If a phone is still in play, the SBL Groove Trainer app is a nice free option.

I have that looper and use it as part of my looping rig. I love it! It’s great for practice and performance, if you choose to go that route. I’ll probably find a different one down the road as I improve as a bassist, performer and all that, but for now it’s perfect.
