The many levels of mismanagement here are amazing, for sure.

@Al1885 take care man, hoping for the best here.

Ok quick. Which one am I taking with me and which one I’m leaving on the front yard?

Wanna know how bad? A market next to my friend’s Panda Express Altadena location is on fire. This is just a mile or two may be a bit more from old town Pasadena

I’m going to push back on this part. It’s not reasonable to expect pumps to be able to keep up with the water demand for a fire this big plus all the breaks from buildings destroyed by fire.

The one with the most sentimental value to you.

or barring that, the BBNE that Nathan gave you

You’re running to your local UHaul and renting a truck, loading them all up, and driving them to… Oregon or something.

I’m sorry, @Al1885 my friend, but none of this is true.

I think Bass did cut the FD budget? As usual, it’s complicated:

Not making a political statement (esp as I would likely have voted for her) but the optics around her Africa trip are pretty bad too.

Meanwhile, even if it wasn’t arson initially, apparently edgelords are getting caught lighting fires inside LA now.

I don’t know what I expected…

Also apparently the Topanga fire was verified arson and they caught the arsonist. This person is, putting it mildly, totally fucked.

I googled that:“An edgelord is someone, typically on the Internet, who tries to impress or shock by posting exaggerated opinions such as nihilism or extremist views.”

Can you explain that in this context?

Sorry but if you cannot connect those dots based on that definition, I do not think I can help much

Maybe I can give a little more background that can help. Areas in NorCal (mainly Oakland) and SoCal (several areas, notably Fullerton) have historically (over the last 40 years) an undercurrent/subculture of these disaffected, mainly white suburban youth that are pissed off for various reasons. This manifests in several ways, both good (SoCal punk came from this) and bad (most of the protests that go bad due to “Black Bloc” action are usually triggered by a similar socioeconomic group).

I think this pretty much captures the spirit. Literally in this case, unfortunately.

Ah, we have the Black bloc over here to. Idiotic youth that do all kinds of violent action under the cover of unrealistic “political” ideas.

They do stupid stuff here (Google g20 Hamburg riots, I was right in the middle of that, cause it happened in my “hood”), but never really “anonymously”.
They want to be seen…

We do live in an era of provocation, incompetence and misinformation. I hope the LA wildfires are not an example of that…

Yeah that’s going to be a huge problem. It’s deep in my shed shed😆

To you comment on the fire starter, it’s tough to really narrow down because we have such a gigantic problem with homeless and they are setting up camp everywhere. We see fires under the freeway all the time. It’s so out of control.

This is the most vivid memory I have of the US: I have never seen so many homeless and poor people as in the US, even in some 3rd world countries.
I wouldnt and couldn’t blame them for the fires, but does a rich country like the US not have a social security system?

The US does not have much of a social safety net compared to most 1st world nations. Going anywhere beyond that statement gets into a discussion of politics that I will not engage in.

Understood & agreed!

Another issue in the US that’s becoming bigger is that the mortgages for home ownership require house insurance. Events like this and the hurricanes that have hit Florida in the past several years are causing insurance companies to pull out of these states. That causes the rates that people pay to skyrocket, and a lot of the claims that get made get denied. We had a fire in the Denver metro area that destroyed almost 1100 homes around Christmas in 2022 and people are still having a hard time rebuilding because the insurance companies are fighting to deny their claims.
